There has been a lot of discussion on this. Some of the confusion surrounds a recruited WO and a true WO. A guy who just WO is in for a tough situation while a recruited WO has a better chance. What I think is happening is that some are called recruited WOs now that are actually given a spot on the fall roster. I think this has changed slightly due to the new roster limits for the spring.
The end result is you still have to perform but as a true WO you don't have a lot of chance.
A recruited WO appears to be anyone who didn't get a scholarship, was recruited , was invited and may depending on the coach, have a spot.

One value of being a recruited walk on, in my etimation, is gaining acceptance to a school you may want to attend academically but might not be able to attend but for the coach's assistance in the admission process.

With the 35-man roster limits, I think a recruited walk on, more and more in the future, will be a guaranteed roster spot in most cases.
