Do you pull pitchers off the field(from another position) without having had them warm up before game or during an inning? Our rec. coach does this all the time to 14/15 yr old pitchers. He rarely tells them if they are even on rotation for day or not, just calls them to mound. Of course they get 8 pitches then they're off. Most walk the first one or two. It's hurting us as a team IMO. Is this normal or what? I see other teams warming up next pitcher most of the time.

Here is an article that I would recommend for any coach to read about proper warm-ups for pitchers.

If the player is already in the game how much actual warm up does he need besides practice pitches on the mound? I am asking because I am not sure of the solution.

Pitching Academy, not sure but you might want to contact the administrator for advertising rates, just a suggestion.
Happens all the time in HS ball. Smart coaches will anticipate and send the kid to the bullpen during his team's at bat. Idiot's just pull the kid from his position and stick him on the mound, and can't understand when he struggles.

Have seen it both ways in 2013's H.S. Team. Not a big roster, especially the Bullpen. It seems that if the Coach can see that a Pitcher, just isn't "on" that day, he may try and leave him in, to see if he can work through it. Allowing them to warm someone up properly. But, will just as often pull 2013, who plays MIF / OF, and put him in to pitch in the middle of an inning, with limited warm up pitches on the mound. And some of our Spring games can be pretty cold. Game cancellations can be from snow, not just rain! I have often wondered whether a Pitcher, brought in quickly under those circumstances, will be truthful with a Coach, as to whether or not they are sufficiently warmed up enough yet. Not wanting to delay the game. Particularly, when we're playing on a field without lights, trying to get a minimum of innings in.

That’s a perspective I’ve never taken, and it would be interesting to see data on that. Will you please post what the 1st 3 batters every relief pitcher sees on that team, do?

In a perfect world, no pitcher would be allowed to head into a game without at least 15 minutes to prepare both mentally and physically for the upcoming ordeal, but as we all know, we don’t live in a perfect world. Frown

What you see happening is only manifested in venues where every pitcher isn’t a PO. In an environment where there isn’t a huge pool of players to choose from, like the rec or HS environment, many times the best pitchers are also the best hitters or fielders. That means when they’re not pitching, they’re out in the field, and that makes it much more difficult, but not impossible, to get them properly prepared.

I would be more concerned with the health of the player not how it is hurting the team. JMO.

What position was the player at before he went to the mound?
