Actually, I don't think so. Prior to Teddie Ballgame coming to be the manager, the Nats were right sorry and attendance was abysmal; after Williams came, it picked up considerably, but to be fair, there wasn't very strong crowd support. It didn't help that with the exception of the Ted Williams years, the Senators were not competitive, with no offense intended to the Eddie Brinkmans, Del Unsers, Dick Bosmans, Camilo Pasquals, and Mike Epsteins of the world.
I received my first wooden bat at a Bat Day promotion in the early 60's-we actually received a real wooden Louisville Slugger! (and bat day crowds were normally pretty large) Nowadays, the bats would be banned for fear of them being used as weapons I guess.
