Lets get real folks---Phelps gets caught on video smoking a Bong---somebody in that room in SC takes his pic because he thinks its cool to have a pic of Phelps doing this. This was supposedly back in November and here we are in February and the picture appears in a notorious rag in England---I want to know how much the kid who took the pic got paid/

Phelps never appeared to be stupid but apparently he is---and who are his friends?
Everyone is sorry "Once they get caught." The reason we see all of this and hear about all of this is because of the world we live in today. Cameras on cell phones? Thank God there were no cameras on cell phones when I was growing up. By the way thank God there were no cell phones. People have been f***** up since the beginning of time. Yes even your heroes and role models you grew up believeing were just that. You just didnt know about it. Now you do. Its human nature to be sorry after you have been caught even if your not you are going to say you are. Phelps had two choices.

"I am truly sorry and made a huge mistake."
or
"I am truly sorry I got caught , **** cell phone cameras."
Some place in time the pc nation said if you apologize we will forgive you. The other side of that nation said COOL.

Phelps apologized, did it really do him any good? Do you feel different about him because he did.

Some look at apology's like Lynn Johnstone, the creator of the cartoon strip “For Better or for Worse”. She says........
quote:
An apology is the superglue of life. It can repair just about anything.

I prefer to to look at it as this unknown author does.
quote:
An apology is a good way to have the last word.
The premise is a bit broad in scope....

Where apologies are concerned, two types of disappointment are involved.

There is a clear difference between:

Apologizing for something you did, that you knew was wrong, when you did it... and you did it anyway....fully aware that there were negative consequences if you were "caught".

AND

Apologizing for honestly trying to do your best, making an honest mistake, and failing in the process.

The former, and what Tom may be referring to, is essentially a self-constructed, usually selfish "exit clause".

The latter is what you sincerely say to colleagues, friends and family when, no matter how hard you try, you fail to deliver on your best intentions, fulfill their expectations etc.

Jay Leno mentioned the other night that President Obama picking all the potential cabinet members who failed to pay taxes, and then "apologized" and paid their taxes was a genius move, as at least he got them to pay their taxes.

But apologizing is different than "fessing up." Like Haver Dad stated - Fessing up is just an exit strategy, and lacks the sincerity of an apology.
I feel when someone gets caught or does something wrong that hurts other, you should apologize.

We are all human, and that means we are not perfect, people make mistakes and that's how we learn, from our mistakes as well as others. How you react to the mistake shows character or lack of. JMO.
If you make a mistake and not show any type of remorse for pain you have brought to others, you aren't worth my time.
The "Mick," Whitey Ford, and even the Babe made sure that they kept all of the training rules. They never drank, kept late nights nor ...

Jim Bouton's Book Ball Four didn't point out all of the other activities that took place even during games.

Ok, so they did mess up. First, Coach May is right when he says that everyone is sorry once they get caught. Nothing more true will ever be posted here. Is Phelps or any of the players the problem or is it our society that makes these guys our heroes or role models? When I heard about Phelps, to be honest, I was not shocked. I've become cynical. It is refreshing to think of some of these guys as what was once the old fashion "All American." Then I realize that even Jim Thorpe messed up and drank a little too much. That's the way of it.

................maybe 60%

But IMHO, apology's are personal and should be intended for those you hurt. When broadcasted to the masses, I feel apologies lose sincerity. For example, did Micheal Phelps hurt anyone here? Are your lives negatively affected? Was Phelps talking to you? Or was it nothing more the damage control and him only stroking the masses for the good of his own concience....and wallet?

Maybe the media is at fault by putting the "Phelps" type under the social microscope and making them feel that every move needs to be weighed against public scrutiny. To me that becomes a scripted life where ownership is lost. I'm not condoning the bong adventure, but like many who are medicated by prescription to escape or join reality, maybe the Phelps "hit" was just what the doctor ordered.
