Runner at first when a wild pitch is thrown. Batter backs way out of the box. Runner easily takes second and heads for third. Catcher throws the ball into LF so runner scores. Ump says that since the catcher had to throw the ball over the batter, batter interference and the runner is out. Is this correct?

If it had been BI the batter would have been out not the runner. However, it's not BI, if anything it is interference by a teammate. Once the ball gets away from the catcher the batter has to clear what area the ctcher needs to make a play. For it to be interference it has to be intentional. If the batter makes an attempt to clear then it is unlikely that he created an interference, even if he got in the way.
