I would really love to be able to follow our "HSBBWebster sons" in the draft. Would any other members be interested in helping to compile a draft-eligible list?

This could be a slightly sensitive topic, as I know there are some sons among our members who are deserving of draft consideration but may not end up hearing their names called. But I would personally like to know which names to listen for!

So if you want to help compile a list, please post the following info for any player YOU are hoping to hear named on June 5th or 6th:

  • Player's name and position
  • City and state
  • HS Baseball Web member's name (player or parent)
  • Whether the player is a HS senior, college junior or senior, or other.

Good luck, Webster sons!

There are several posters here that I suspect will have kids called up. I know of several kids here in my city that probably will. I'd rather see their name posted afterwards than to be left off by me or posted and they aren't called. I'm looking forward to the draft and will actually be off work, so able to catch a lot of it!

All I have to say is, good luck to all those draft eligible and especially our HSBBW boys!!!
I am hoping to hear everyone's son's names that I know is eligible for the draft.

Reality is it may or may not happen, and that does not mean that they are not considered to be pro players. For HS players teams may feel that you will not sign and head to college.

I know what many must be going through, but remember one thing, being honest in ones willingness to sign (for any dollar amount) and go play will most likely be the deciding factor in where you will be drafted, who will draft you or not at all.

Two of our websters I know who I think will have sons called very early, possibly first round.
Good luck! May all your dreams come true.

Very best wishes today and tomorrow for many "dreams come true" for our Webster sons! Please feel free to share any news here!

Even if it's your own son with the exciting news, of course it's not bragging. You are doing many of us a big favor by letting us share the thrill of this special day!

This is mostly about the 3,000 kids eligible for the Draft, from the expected first-round picks all the way to the 50th-round guys. This is about the dream of athletes who grew up on youth teams and worked their way into this opportunity, and maybe someone will be that next Mike Piazza -- who recently retired after a 16-year Hall of Fame career that came after he was drafted in the 62nd round in 1988.

BEST OF LUCK TO ALL,.....the countdown has begun!!!! :

Absolutely! Being an early round draft pick means more money and I guess a certain amount of prestige. However, in the long run... it matters none. Son has a HS friend who was drafted in the 39th or 40th rounds (from college) - has moved up to high A and I suspect will see AA this year or certainly start next year there. Life is about what you do with what you're given. All these kids drafted are having an opportunity that most will never see. I'll follow from start to finish!

PGStaff,

I read that your organization had provided a lot of player videos to ESPN for this year's draft coverage. I'd be interested in any more info you have about that.

Julie

P.S. And can you do anything about making a few particular players' names pop up as quickly as possible so some of us can quit holding our breath? Big Grin

Hi!
Having been through 3 drafts with two sons, I clearly remember how exciting and nerve wracking these next two days can be.

My best advice is to remember that, whatever the outcome, God loves your precious son even more than you and has a wonderful plan for his life. Try not to worry! Everything is going to be fine...no matter what happens. Smile

WOW...
...That may be the single best piece of advice I have have ever seen on this site.
Tim Melville goes to the Royals in the 4th round, # 115 overall. Tim was first round material for sure, likely fell due to financial demands, but hopefully this means the Royals are prepared to pony up!

Tim's dad is a poster here but he sometimes wishes to remain anonymous, so I won't "out" him. He can come forward or not, as he wishes.
TxMom,

I agree, your post was one of the best ever:

Thank you for a very true reminder!

Julie

P.S. For any newer members here who don't know who TxMom is, her older son is now playing in MLB.
Not my son but his good friend got drafted today. Got to share an exciting experience today during my son's high school graduation. 240 kids in a football stadium to graduate with the bleachers full of friends and families on both sides of the stadium.

Sitting with the family of a pitcher on my son's high school team. Their son was projected to be drafted about #112. My older son had his cell phone on the web tracking the draft for them while we all tried to listen to graduation.

Pitcher's dad cell phone rings right in the middle of the ceremony while the principal is speaking. He excuses himself to move to the back of the stadium so as not to disturb all the parents and friends of the graduates. I hear him say he has his son's cell and is watching son on field graduate. Talks for awhile, calling his wife over to listen.

His son ended up being drafted as the #104 pick. My older son texted my younger son who whispered to his friend he'd been drafted! It was really neat to watch the parents excitement and this ended months (years?) of speculation. What a graduation day for this young man. It made a really special day one that became even more memorable.

I hope great things happen for this very special player and his wonderful family. Lots of hard work ahead of him but he's so excited to have this chance. It's been interesting to watch this all unfold during the 4 years my son has played with him. He and his family are the most humble people I've ever met and certainly some of the nicest.
I find this draft to be very strange.

Considering that I know some HS players passed on signability, lots of junior college players I know who passed up too. Many were position players, maybe because of a strong draft year for position guys, they would rather go back to school for next years draft.
Erik, justbb --- BIG congrats and welcome to the Pads! Way cool!

The draft always is a conundrum. Pads organization drafted a whole bunch of OFers last year, and has some seriously tasty young OFers right now. So they took more, high (?) Last season they had a young 3B pretty much blocked by quality guys ahead of him. So they trade him for Edmonds (and look how long that lasted), the kid's on the 40 man for the Cards....but yet they take several 3B's high this year. Well, I obviously don't understand the draft Razz.

Sent my PM'd hurrah to Timmy's (Timmy??? Wink) Dad -- goin' public now! KC could mean a fast track, I'm likin' it!

The draft always leaves some questions. There are too many things to try and figure it out - different organizations have different needs obviously, but they also have different philosophies. Kids slide because of signability issues, etc. The first few rounds I think are usually predictable, after that..... lots of surprises.
Thanks, everyone.. and congrats to all the other posters whose sons were drafted today. Today was a very special day.

The most amazing thing.. there were six (that's right 6 players from Rusty's Summer team (all kids from the Spokane area) that were drafted today. Those players: Rusty Shellhorn (Bum, Jr.), Trevor Shull, Andrew Kittredge, Beau Brett, Jarek Cunningham, and Bryan Peterson. Good job, boys.
