My son is a 2015 LHP & Power Hitting RH Hitter. He has been to a few showcases, and tournaments throughout the west.  He also went to Cary last year for the U-16 tryouts. This summer he will attend the Area Code tryout in Eugene, and the Perfect Game Showcase in Minnesota.  We have heard whispers of several big D1's having interest in him, but nothing real concrete.  Recently, we contacted one of the rumored D1's, and my son spoke with the head coach for awhile. Coach asked him to call him weekly to keep him updated. He also said he will come see him play at one of the events this summer. Also know that the coach, or his staff have seen son play/or showcase severaL times. Is this a normal part of the recruiting process?

rynoattack,

I think everything you've shared is "normal" except for the weekly contact request.  For a 2015, it would be more normal to contact the coach with milestones (SAT scores, great games, etc...) rather than weekly.

Can we assume your son's travel coach has been touch with these college coaches?  If so, ask the travel coach about the weekly contact request.  The travel coach may know the college coach better than you, and may know his way of doing things.

BTW.....Is your son reaching out to new programs, and introducing himself?  The reason I bring that up is that you shared that you heard "whispers".  In my mind that is telling me you are relying on word of mouth or someone else to make contact.  I hope I'm off base, and you are actively learning about these programs and contacting coaches.

Good luck.

Fenway - Thanks for the good advice.  We haven't reached out as much as we should. We are just learning the process, and I have been picking up a lot of tips from this site. We have filled out several questionnaires for D-1's that have requested us to, and a few dream schools that son would love to attend. As far as the whispers that we have heard, they have come from travel team coach, and a parent of a

senior teammate that has already committed to a D-1.  Son is going to call coach every week to check in. from the posts I have reason here, I hadn't seen that method before. I was really just wondering if son is being led on, or if the method was standard practice.

rynoattack,

Based on what I'm reading your son must be very talented and a high priority recruit.  If that is the case and I were that coach, I would love to hear from your son weekly. this is not out of the ordinary at all for recruiting top players today.  Only a few years ago recruiting was much different.  We didn't have as many young underclassmen making commitments.  Now days the relationship starts early and last's longer before the kid steps into the classroom.  Many things can change! As a coach I want to stay close and know what's going on.

PG - Thanks for the input.  My son is going to stay in touch with the coach, and hopefully, it will work out.  I get nervous sometimes that we may be a little behind, and I want to make sure that I do everything I can to assist him in this process.  I was reading on line where Freshman had already begun to commit, so I want to make sure he doesn't miss the boat.  I also want to make sure that he has plenty of opportunities, so we will try our best to listen, learn, and grant any requests from coaches that we can.
