So, my son is undergoing a very strange and frustrating situation in his freshman year in college. I'm going to assume the coach knows what he is doing or there is something my son isn't telling me.

His velocity had been down a little during pre-season scrimmages, but still in the top handful on the pitching staff. HC had him sit out practices for the nine days at the end of spring pre-season and gave him a reading list. First series comes and he and one other kid are on the list to not dress out. No reason given, but his one pen before the season opener had been canceled by rain, so maybe having not thrown in a couple of weeks it made sense. Second weekend series comes and he's still listed as "not dressing." but had a pen early in the week that he says went pretty well. After Sunday's game he asks the HC if he's done anything wrong. Coach tells him "no" that he had always planned to have him rest the first two weekends but that he'd be pitching today v. UCLA. He comes in this morning and he's again listed as "not dressing."

Absent my son withholding info from me, I can't imagine what's going on. Couldn't be a roster move - there are only 34 rostered players and he has two not dressing. I don't see how he could be thinking red shirt. My son wouldn't really be a candidate for that because he's academically a sophomore right now and will be a junior next year. Anybody ever experience something like this or have any ideas what kind of reasoning would be behind such a move?

You can only dress a max of 33, so there'd need to be at least one not dressed.  Maybe if he wasn't planning on using him he's doing it so the other kid isn't the only one?  Seems like a weird reason...but who knows.  I guess if it's me, I'd be asking the PC, instead of the HC.  In most cases, the PC is telling the HC which pitchers are ready to go for each game.   My son always had a lot better relationship with the PC than the HC.   Maybe have him run it by him and see what he says.

The HC is also the PC. I thought it was 35. Either way, he's actually only dressing 30 because one guy is injured and another is academically ineligible. He had a 35th, but he was academically ineligible and a RS-Sr, so had no more eligibility anyway and was just dropped.

If your head is spinning, imagine what is going through your son's mind?  I would stress being cool.  The season is young, he's a freshman and maybe going through a tired arm period.  Although I can imagine what you're going through, it's a four year journey, don't get all stressed he's not dressing early on.  Work on being a good teammate and getting that velo back up.  The coaches will take notice.

And to be clear I did NOT contact the coach.

Hmmmm.....interesting, if it wasn't anything real serious, it makes you wonder if the HC happens to read these forums?   I've never heard of a HC calling a parent about a "nothing too bad" academic issue.  Guess maybe we all need to start being a little more careful?

My son's HC or AC was good at reaching out to us when it involved our son.  Never grades but a few other times in his four years.  I think maybe the coach was just wanting to let the parent know why his son was not playing.  But you may be right.  There are a lot of lurkers here who read things but I really can't imagine a HC reading this in the middle of the season but maybe a friend or acquaintance.

I've thought several times when parents were trashing coaches or organizations or schools that it would be hard to believe that someone connected was not reading.

A local HS Hockey coaching legend(former long time NHL'er)starts out each year by giving the parents his cell number, and says, "Give me a call anytime if your son is having troubles at school, or otherwise.  I'm here to listen, and to help. Just don't talk to me about hockey, or I'll hang up on you and block your number.")

Without knowing more about the situation, it seems like  the coach has your son's best interests in mind.

Having been a college coach at the D1 level I can assure you this is the case. Every level of college is represented here... It's not just parents and the occasional ambitious player.

"If you want to meet to talk about your son's playing time, bring his jersey with you."

Good to hear that it is nothing serious, and that the coach took the time to reach out to you.  And good to hear that you did not contact the coach.

My son is just a high school sophomore, but I am steadfastly resolved to only contact coaches to say "thank you" at the end of seasons, or to talk about any injury/health concerns.
