In our first pre-season game Friday night, The coach called my son's number to close the game, He was nervous I think, as he threw warmups on the mound he looked impressive, I glanced over to look at the batter, who was intently watching him warm up also, I noticed the high hands on the bat approach as he took his practice swings, reading this I knew the inside fastball could probably not be reached to easy, Now the warmups are over, The kid steps in and Daniel gets on the rubber, The batter takes his stance and Daniel see's the high hands, He knows what this means, He reaches back and throws the fastball by him on the inside corner, the umpire groaned, "strike". I'm thinkin "pretty cool, 1 pitch 1 strike. Next pitch same thing, good stuff on the inside, he swings and misses, Strike 2, Im starting to believe that Daniel is understanding this reading the batter stuff we work on, and then he throws the third pitch. The coach called for a bender, well Daniel hung it over the plate and the batter took him yard over the 345 mark, I looked at him and saw some disgust in his eyes, he knew what happened. He hung it over the plate where the guy could get around on it, Pitching is not only throwing the ball but learning to understand when to shake off pitches and when to go inside and outside, reading the batter is important to a pitching carrer, I thought you would like to hear about his varsity Debut, He wasn't frazzled by the home run, he settled down and won the game, and did very well, I was proud, but a little ribbing, may be in the future laugh Any good welcome to the Varsity level stories.

Coach Dan,

One year, my 14 yo was brought into the game by the head coach( I was assistant)in the bottom of the last inning. The bases were loaded. He was unconcerned and in control mentally as he went 2-0. I got his attention and called for a fastball right down the middle. He frowned and shook his head not wanting to throw it. I asked for it again not wanting a walk. The batter hit the ball over the CF fence. It was a walk off game ending homer. As my son walked off the field passed me he simply said " Nice call Dad" I will always remember that night.
