We are suppose to officially start our outdoor practices this coming weekend. It's suppose to be sunny in the high 50's but it has snowed here all week, so all the sun will do is make the fields pudding.

We've been stuck hitting indoors all Winter long and I don't know about the players, but I'm ITCHING to get outside! My question is: What do you guys do when the field is too wet to play on but it's too pretty to not get some work in? We have a massive parking lot at our complex so a black top practice is always an option and that's what I'm leaning towards. I was blessed to play at places that didn't get a lot of rain outs and inclement weather, so this is a new one for me.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you have.

When I was in KY we played at a public park and was never ready by the start of the preseason. We had 6 weeks of preseason practice and we would spend at least 4 of those weeks on the parking lot. We used yellow machine dimple balls for groundballs. We did virtually everything we would do on a dry field but sometimes the speed would be scaled back. Obviously we didn't do any type of diving or sliding so we had to stress hustle in everything else to compensate for the loss there.
Thanks for all the suggestions. The fields we play on are owned by the city and...well I won't get into the names I could call them when it comes to access to the fields. Anyways, I'm afraid it will be too wet to get into the outfield with out messing up the grass, so I'd like to stay on the black top. To put things into perspective, we could fit 3-4 full sized infields into the parking lot at our complex. I'm thinking we're going to spend the day on bunt coverages, first and third steals, and run downs. With 27 kids I have to have a lot going at once to keep their attention spans, which could be compared to that of a bird seeing something shiny.

I contemplated sliding and diving practice on the black top just to toughen up the players that are to afraid to get their dress dirty to dive on the field. I'm sure I could get away with that!
