One of the crucial things no one ever bothers to teach umpires is the need to balance a schedule...I try and not do more than 3-4 games per week and I do not do more than 2 games in a calendar day....
I find that I am just not fresh enough to give my best effort if I exceed that total....the other reason is I love baseball, and I do not want it feeling like a "job".....
If you feel burned out, take a few days off...its not worth losing your edge...and its only good business......a burned out umpire does a bad job and gets less games or does not advance to higher baseball where the money is better.....
Up here in Northern New Jersey, I live in Wayne and umpire in the Northwest corner on N.J., we have had the worst flooding since Hurricane Floyd many towns are flooded out. Third game yesterday, I have another today and three next week. There are so many make up games everyone is scrambling.
