Finally got to see Cosby play Matoaca today- what a ball game that was. Cosby seems to be a very well coached solid team. I do not envy anyone who faces them in a single elimination playoff format!
They were so solid on defense- made one play where a kid tried to stretch it to third base from first base- when he did everyone was exactly where they were supossed to be- 3b was in middle of field at cutoff, SS was covering 3b. They handled it like it was routine and with confidence. Not many high school teams would have executed the play.
It is pretty obviou those kids are very well coached.
Also have to mention what a beautiful facility they have. Lots of work has been done since they opened by someone

I luv to hear about well executed fundementals like cut offs. What I found interesting is the comment that not many HS would have executed the play. That is kind of distressing.

I helped coach my boys through 12U travel ball and make no claim to being Joe McCarthy. We spent entire practices on cutoffs starting at 9 years old and executed them properly at that age. We threw out a slew of runners before other coaches adjusted. Defense is a totally undervalued part of the game and struggling programs would be wise to focus there to improve.

For them, it WAS routine.

The real question is, why do some teams fail to do these sorts of things?

When you watch certain teams, you wonder what goes on at their practices. I mean, they get the same amount of practice time as everyone else, right? So how come some folks get it done, while others don't? And for those who don't, why do people put up with it year after year without making changes?

A lot of coaches could learn a lot by giving up a day or two to go watch Cosby practice. There is no wasted time. Players hustle from drill to drill and from batting to the field, etc. They aren't there any longer than anyone else, but when they ARE there they are all business. There's no standing around shagging flies during BP, nothing like that.

BTW, Matoaca's coach played under Lowery some years ago. So it's no mistake that his teams play well. Coach Stoots learned how to run a team and you see it when they play, too.

There's a reason why some teams are at the top of the standings year after year, and it's not due to superior gene pools in their districts.

Don't know what coaches are getting in Central VA but the Southside guys are getting about $3,000 a year.

For that kind of dough you get two kinds of guys. The ones that love the game and just can't get enough and those that are cashing the check.

Defensive rotations and cutoffs haven't changed much in 125 years so there's no deep dark secret to it. Just work.
