From reading everyone’s great advice – here is what I have summarized as to how to choose a school:

  • Go where you are loved
  • Go where you love
  • Go where you can play sooner rather than later
  • Go where there is a great academic fit

Any other points I a missing?

Son (2014) has two great options where all of the above apply.  If you find the perfect fit – what are the pros/cons of committing early or waiting to see what the summer may bring?  Worried if we wait the current options may go away.  Not sure if we will find any better fits for him both academically or athletically.  Thanks.

BBALLFAN2012 - Our younger son committed right about now of his junior year.  Maybe early March?

He had 2 firm offers at that time.  Other schools were interested.  He could have waited to see what else evolved...but why?  The 2 offers represented 2 of his top 3 choices.  So...similar situation as your son right now.

He chose one...and never looked back.  For him, it was (and still is) the right choice.  I think you and your son either know or will know.  Trust your instincts...which may tell you to do something different.  But you and your son know whats in your hearts.

Good luck!

BBALLFAN2012,

It looks like your son is in good shape and you have identified the most important aspects of choosing a school...my son was in the same situation however before making a final decision the one thing we decided to do was make another trip to visit his top two schools "in season".

We found this to be a great opportunity to spend some extra time with the coaches and more importantly, spend some time with players on game days. Both schools had him hang out in the dugout prior to the game and it was a much different atmosphere than during his "unofficial" visit. You might be surprised what your son will see/hear while being a fly on the wall. It also gave me a great opportunity to talk to some of the parents during the games.

At the end of the day I do think my son would have been happy at either school however I also think a deciding factor was that he really liked the "chemistry" he witnessed on the team that he signed his NLI.

Best of luck to you and your son, exciting times ahead...try to enjoy it!

Spend as much time on those campuses as possible.  Keep in mind that there is not a single college in the country that isn't FUN on a Friday night.  So be sure to visit those schools during other times.

Audit a class or 5.

Talk to as many students as possible.  Be sure to talk to both athletes and non athletes.  Keep in mind that every kid is 1 ACL away from being an "ex" athlete.

Eat in the cafeteria.

Obviously stay over a time or 2.  Try to do it with the team and maybe with a friend from home that isn't on the team.

Talk to some professors.  While you are at it maybe a dean or 2.

Meet the academic advisors.

Go see several games.  Go see several practices.  Sometimes let coach know you are coming.  Sometimes don't.

Funny how so many people I meet put more time and effort into shopping for a car then researching where their child will get a degree from.  I'm not accusing you of that.  Just pointing out that this decision is bigger then just what uniform he'll wear.  It should be treated that way.

If all else fails go to the school with the best reputation for "hot, rich girls"!  BMW's and Lexus are good signs!
