I have a freshman at a D3 school who has decided to change his major to something his current school doesn't offer. Would like to play for D1 school near SW Ohio. He won starting of position at current school & is hitting a little over .400. If he should transfer would he be eligible for scholy or have to sit out year. Thanks for your input. Old Taft Tiger

You can transfer up or lateral without having to sit out. Moving down and you would have to sit out a year. The answer to your question is no.
Old Taft Tiger, actually it would be possible for him to be eligible next year at a Div. I school without the need to sit out a year, as long as he wasn't "recruited" to the Div. III school. You may want to search for the blog on my website titled "NCAA Rules: Definition of a Recruited Athlete."
If he's not considered "recruited", is academically eligible at his current school at the end of this year, and is released by his current school, he could be eligible next year at a Div. I program.
