My boys are the same--one can never have too many bats I guess.

My boys are getting a pitching machine and some balls, the t-shirts the girls help me find here, and although it isn't really a Christmas present (even though its taking some of my fun money) they are going to some baseball camps in Dec and January.

I saw the cutest ornament today. It was a Santa dressed in catcher's gear and it had a little pull string on it to make his arms move.
This is a little sad. My oldest (RHP) has asked for a trip to Florida with his college team for Christmas. The doctor is about 90% sure that he will have to take a medical redshirt this year, which means he will be replaced on the travel roster and will have to pay his own way in order to go on the team's pre-season trip to Florida.

He is in his third year (D3) and can't stand to stay home while his team goes on the trip, so I guess we'll be paying. The silver lining is that he expected to take 5 years to graduate, so he will hopefully still get to play two more years with his team.

Oh Julie, I am so sorry to hear this. Makes me very sad Frown. But, better to not push too hard and face an even worse injury, so the caution is good. Thoughts are with you and your son.

A plane ticket sounds like an awfully nice Christmas present!! Or, as I told my S one time when he got something big, "That's Christmas, birthday, Easter, and the 4th of July for the next 3 years" Smile

For my son, I do always get baseball history books or recent good baseball writing. This year I got a big "Baseball history timeline" and the SI book (which frankly doesn't look all that good). I have to say, that I am always somewhat aware that, when the playing of baseball comes to an end, he will still have that encyclopedic knowledge of the game and that love for its history and its place in American culture, and to me that is still a lot of what is at the heart of why it is such a special game....I also always get him a baseball wall calendar. And a dance calendar for my dancing daughter, and a writing or s****r calendar for my sporty, creative writing daughter. Years from now, they'll sit around with each other and laugh about how there were always 3 wrapped calendars under the tree and how they pretended to be pleased for my sake Wink

Ahhh ... this brings back so many memories. I remember when AJ was a little guy ... maybe 4 ... he wanted catcher's gear because his babysitter's son was a catcher. I have a picture of him wearing this junion sized mask ... squatting down like he actually thought he knew what he was doing ... (sniffle sniffle).

But now ... since everything he needs is supplied by somebody (I think he has a contract with Louisville Slugger for his gloves, not one of those sticks they use to hit the ball LOL and his agent gets him stuff like cleats and Underarmor ... we really have started to get him memorabilia. His favorite player of all time is Orel Hershiser and we have done a pretty good job of getting him Hershiser items, including a game day ticket for the night he set the record for consecutive scoreless innings. We also used to always get him a baseball wall calendar but I don't think Mrs Katie Shappi wants one of those hanging in their kitchen.

I miss the days of buying the baseball stuff, but I don't miss the expense.
I can't believe it, but I don't think I'm getting my son any baseball related items this year. Has to be a first! He's got all the clothing and things he needs and when they get into college, they are provided with the clothing they need.

I did get my son one of those titanium necklaces in the fall that have become so popular. If I hadn't already done that.... I'm sure it would be under the tree.
I am having a terrible time finding gifts for my 15 year old. Dad has already bought everything needed for baseball season and it is only November. Son wants me to “surprise” him.

Lafmom
Titanium necklace? What does it look like, is there a website where I can view it?

Punching bag with gloves – great idea also, I will look into this.

Ladies, keep the ideas coming please.
We have a new sporting goods store in town, so, you know that husband that stops off at the tavern after work?? I now have a son that stops off at the sporting goods store after work! He goes every other night!! AND is spending his earnings in there instead of in his gas tank! Anyway, I think the store is keeping a wish list for him. BROTHER!!!

Okay Lafmom....is a "titanium necklace" considered "baseball-related"????? If so, I succombed and there WILL be something baseball oriented under the tree after all.

LOL Very good point! I guess in my mind it's baseball oriented!! Do other athletes wear those? Big Grin It seemed as though after I got Michael's, every player I looked at has one. I kinda like the look! Smile
Someone mentioned the Baseball Express or East Bay catalogue as being the same as the ol Penny's toy catalogue. Had to laugh as we got our Baseball Express flyer in the mail today,...and on the front cover they have made a Christmas tree out of bats and balls. Gotta say it worked as it caught my attention! Funny how the times change! No more nerf balls and bats to play with indoors while its cold outside,..although I gotta admit I bought an electronic hand held baseball game for a stocking stiffer. Wonder if Santa will put it in my stocking or my sons? Shoot,..shoulda bought two! ha!
LadyNmom...perhaps Baseball Express gift cards this year Wink! ha!

You would be surprised how a move across country 2 days after Christmas helps to keep all Christmas shopping to a minimum

LadyNMom..... I think y'all are getting a BIG Christmas present with the move itself! Having the increased family time as well as being able to see B play.... biggest blessing you could receive! Smile
Okay, my son has already purchased this, but I will let you know that it is a huge success in his house (six players). It is called Guitar Hero. I don't know all of the specifics but you use your Playstation to operate it. It comes with a small plastic guitar. He said it is so much fun. The kids all take turns playing it, some are really good. He did leave it home after Thanksgiving since finals were coming up he thought it might be a distraction. Very addicting he says but alot of fun. They have them at Walmart.
I don't think we are doing much on the baseball front this year. Son has about all he needs this year. He could use a new catcher's bag though.

One thing I did just order is items from the College store. he just signed his NLI so I thought he would like some shorts, shirts and things. I could even design the shirt myself. SO one I got was a Polo that I put the school's name and baseball on it. He likes shirts like that for work.

I am having a harder time with our oldest. He stopped playing baseball this year. Right now is going to a local JUCO and is not sure yet where he wants to go next year. So that same idea will not work for him. He did just by himself an Ipod. But accesories for it are the only idea I have. Besides money of course.
I bought my son one of the titanium necklaces after reading about them here. Was delivered yesterday before I got home. My nosy son opens the box-even though it was addressed to ME! "Thanks mom-I really wanted one of these."
I'd also ordered him one of the NIKE ID shirts you can customize-the receipt was sent to our e-mail (my husband's & mine-not my son's)-Mr. Nosy again mentions "Thanks for the shirt-you really need to be careful to take off these e-mails if you're trying to keep it a secret!" (I told him he needs to keep his nosy self off our e-mail) At this rate he will have no surprises under the tree-serves him right! He's worse than when he was younger and used to go through the house looking for our hiding places!
Got my son a new max bat (maple) thanks to reading the players forum. Can't wait till he gets it and uses it and of coarse the hard to find Wii system for him and his brother but he'll like the bat better and since he just started indoor practice today at 6:00am for the varsity team it will be well broken into by the summer league
