For all you fans out there that are very big into having your team ranked and hold the all state/area very high...I want to ask, what do those really mean? and who is doing all the rankings and what qualifies him/her on baseball? I am not a very big fan of all those preseason polls, I mean its really nice and all...but I think coaches/parents/players think that being ranked, in the end, means something. Yes at the HS level its very important to earn a high regional seed...but should a coach have a weak schedule so they can be ranked? Ive seen schools play their first 8-10 games agaisnt teams that dont deserve to be on the field, and earn a ranking, but when they have a challenge they get slapped around. I know they are usually pretty accuarate, but to many times to much emphasis gets put on them. So my question is i guess, that in the end, what does it mean if the suntimes has your team in there...and what do they consider when doing that? Observing hs baseball of late, ive seen "ranked teams" that lacked some, and unranked teams that deserved some pub, but I guess all is fair...just something I have always been curious about

Exactly right, 2ndbasemom. Just saw where Illinois Wesleyan (not sure if d3 or NAIA but has 10 losses) beat d1 Illinois State.
Rankings are nice for scrapbooks but down the road only thing anyone remembers is state tournament.
We know this all too well from hoops as high school has been ranked #1 in state at various times in past 3 seasons and as high as 6th nationally in 04. They have tons of fun memories and great success but lasting image is of disappointing 3rd in state in 04 and back to back stunning losses in regional and sectional in 03 and 02.
Great thing about baseball is smaller schools do have a chance and on a given day with a good pitcher and a little d can beat anyone.
lets see. oprf @ 13-8, lockport @ 14-6,schaumburg @ 9-7. New Trier obviously is the team of the season so far and waubonsie valley looks good as well. regional pairings for lockport are tough, oprf easy and rolling meadows can surprise with the terriffic brian porter, a great coach and lots of pitching. rankings mean a lot....@ the end of the season only!!...still a long way to go.
