I don't like them fixing vision at the hat (the eyes don't focus well that long), First look long (outfield fence) then site in and scan from the hat to the belt, repeat until the arm nears release.

Then "fine focus" on release point, track the ball for speed, spin and location AND then barrel to the center of the baseball ------ QUICKLY! All the while; relaxed controlled breathing (exhale slowly).

kevin long the hitting coach of the yankees and arod talk about this in their dvd pro hitters workout and it makes a lot of sense.

they focus on the cap to get the eyes focused on the right distance relative to release point. your eyes focus like a telephoto lens and you want to be as focused as possible on release and the first 20 feet out of the hand. after that it's too late. if you soft focus at a longer distance your eyes may not readjust that fast. it's more reliable to focus on the cap logo emblem. i think they're right
You know how when you send your kid to the closet to look for something and he comes back and says, "it's not there."

That's because he's looking at the space in between himself and the item he's hunting for.

This is how I approached hitting. I saw the face of the pitcher, the hat, the fence in the background, etc. But at the same time I didn't really see any of them truly.

Once the pitcher began his stride my eyes would train in on the slot where the ball came out. At that point, it was a clear focus on the baseball.

Hope that makes sense. Smile
