The Coach could possibly thinking about maybe changing his mind because there may have been a chance that he could have possibly overlooked the fact that there may have been good players that he didn't know about.

Yes, I think that's it.

I never could figure out why some coaches make those statements before they see the new talent, how kids have progressed or regressed or how they have stayed the same.

Sometimes a hs coach will ask younger players to work out with the older players for the experence, sort of like a non rostered player being invited to spring training, he won't make the MLB team but its an honor and great experence.
Whether he makes varsity or not the coach does have an interest in your son and his developement.
Hi Luvthisgame,
Last year, my son was a Freshman, there was a lot of talk about him playing up, Jv being the team in question, but, no go, he played with the Freshman team, and had an outstanding year. He had a great time being a key player on the team. He learned so much, and just had a great time with all of his teammates. I can't imagine a better opportunity for him.
This year, as a Sophomore, he was selected to the varsity team, one of a handfull of kids in the past five years at his school. we are thrilled for him, and believe that is where he belongs, however, we realize that this will be a much different year. He has already been doing some pitching, he has six innings in, two weeks into the season. It's great to see him holding his own on the mound, but he's about third, or fourth in line for his secondary position at first base. We doubt if he'll get any time playing time there at all. He is feeling quite humbled! He's not used to a lot of bench time.
Playing up takes them out of the limelight on the field, but as we were told at the beginning of the year, this is really about the future. He is getting some great experience, and will be expected to be a team leader in the years to come.
So, really, whatever team your son makes this year is going to be a great experience for him. Good luck staying calm, and supporting your son!
My son is in a similar situation but it's for sophomore. He was called up to pitch, threw 3 shutout innings and went 3 for 3. Talk is to move him up at least to soph, maybe JV. However, if it happens great if not that's great too. At least he is playing and hopefully having fun. Is he good enough? Sure. Does he have to pay his dues? Yes. Point is our kids time will come and there is no rush be patient and enjoy the ride. I hope he gets what he wants.
Colorado Mom being able to say he is on the varsity is great but he needs to be playing to stay sharp. I'm not quite sure if he should ask to play JV also. Maybe someone else can give an opinion on that.
