I agree about the late season emphahsis but, realistically VCU didn't IMO have a shot at an at large when the likes of Wake Forest and LSU with rpi's of 25 and 37 don't get in (VCU was 83).
That leaves ODU and JMU who would have been a shoe in IMO had they gotten to 40 wins. Sad to see that late season collapse but it's no secret finishing strong is a big deal. ODU had a 55 RPI and JMU 77. They just don't playa strong enough schedule.
I think they pretty much all know 40 wins in a mid major is requisite to an at large birth or playing alot of SEC, ACC teams and breaking even or close. They need to look more closely at the type schedule Elon tries to play Elon had 13 games against ACC/SEC teams and 8 games against tourney teams not counting their own conference.
How did the 3 Va. schools do -
VCU 1-4 losing twice to Va. tech
ODU 2-2 splitting with UVA and MAryland
JMU 2-5 beating tech twice losing to Md twice and Clemson 3 times
They need 10 plus games against good teams. VCU played Randolph Macon d-3. Elon plays tough non conference compettion. They beat UNCW twice, and also played a good Kent State team. That means they played 18 tough out of conference teams.
That what the mid Di Va teams need to do. It would also give them a mis d1 recruiting edge.
