In reading the Jeff Manship thread, I got to wondering about what happens to a players scholarship $$ if he's injured? I know he can redshirt and keep his eligibility, but the school is still obligated to provide the $$ aren't they? Or is there some kind of "injury clause"?

We got the dreaded call last week. Son can't throw without pain in his shoulder and his fingers going numb. He can almost dislocate his shoulder just by flexing his muscles. Came home and got an MRI and goes to a specialist this Thursday. Our question was if he has to have surgery who pays for it. So far with his schedule he can come home and our insurance has covered the MRI and the doctors visit. He has had the trainers working on him and there was talk of the school's team physician looking at him if necessary. They will red shirt him if need be. We are still hoping that with rest and maybe something like its just inflamed and pinching a nerve, but the trainer said he shouldn't be able to flex it like he did. Will try to keep you updated.

Two aspects here---medical and scholarship

Medical--is usually the school insurance picks up where yours leaves, if it does in fact leave off

Scholarship--- he should get a medical redshirt this year--- if a player does not recover and baseball is over every school does things differently-- I know of cases where the scholarship remained in force--but check with your school and make sure of all the details

TR is exactly right. This varies from school to school. Unlikely that with 11.7 scholarships they would use one for someone unable to play. My daughter went to a Big Ten school and was injured. Her sports scholarship was removed but replaced by a scholarship not chargeable through the athletic program. They did this with 3 other athletes also. But there is no obligation to fund the athletic scholarship beyond the year.
Quick update, son found out he is going to have surgery and 8 to 12 months of rehab. Thanks for the well wishes. At one time I was really down but I saw the post about the basketball players and realized this is just a bump in the road of life.
CatchMm, When my son was in high school he worked out with a former catcher from Liberty. He was a teammate of Sid Bream.

Good thing you found out what's going on with the arm. I had a similar problem 'back in the day'. The ball did not grow as fast as the socket and so the integrity of my shoulder was not good. It still hurts to this day when I throw BP, just because other damage was incurred in my trying to 'throw through' the pain. The rehab period will be a distant memory sooner than you think. Best of luck!!
