Trying to teach hitting to someone based solely on what we see on video and disregarding what the hitter feels through his swing does not work.

Many of the swings that we pick apart on video are developed by feeling the opposite of what we see on the video.

Many times a hitter feels like he is swinging more down and through, but when we look at his video his barrel is traveling upward through the ball.

If this is the case, do we really want to teach what we want to see? Or do we want to teach what will get the hitter to the desired result?

Some hitters need to be told to swing down more and some need to be told to swing up more depending on the feel within their swing.

MLB hitters don't choose a bat path....The way their body moves to create whip decides the path of the bat....

MLB hitters work on developing and maintaining a certain path, not body movements. The goal is the path. The only thing that matters is the path that the bat takes, not the hands, not the knee, not the elbows.
Jimmy, intersting. So how do you know that what you "feel" and what you teach by "feel" is what they "feel?" I've never disregarded that a sense of awareness on how one's body works is very important to the swing but I also recognize that no two people "feel" the same impulses etc. IMO, you have to do both when developing a hitter. Let the see their swings. Let them see MLB swings. Have them swing a bat and use their "mind's eye" to help them transform one to the other. They won't be exact. Then, discuss either progress or setbacks and keep moving forward.

Show me and I see. Tell me and I hear. Let me do and I remember. A "happy medium" is the best along with patience and knowing that as with every long term goal, there will be setbacks. JMHO!

Trying to sell your grip gizmo, I see!

Maybe the hitter can hum, swing high, swing low, sweet chariot while they swing!

MLB hitters already have great body movement......They developed it when they were learning....I won't belabor the point....It's common sense!

Now, go sell your grip gizmos, if you must!

It's simple... You communicate with them. You find out what they feel right now and you work from there.

CoachB25, you have a very good outlook on this and you are actually making my point for me.

I watch, I listen to what they have to say, and together we put a plan in place that works for them and their feel within their swing.

If I told every hitter to do the same thing according to what I felt or what I think hitters should feel and do, my credibility as a coach is gone.

Yes of course. You are right about hitters seeing video of themselves. Mirrors are also a great way for hitters to see what they are feeling.

My point had to do with watching MLB hitters and telling young hitters to do what they do. Even when we don't know what those MLB hitters are "feeling" when they are hitting.

There is a difference between working on your swing and working on hitting.

Kids need to work a little more on hitting. The flight of the ball doesn't lie.

Never mentioned it here. Just trying to help those that might be listening to one and only one direction.

Why are you so defensive with what you teach? It seams as if you are trying to sell to us that you know more than all of us because you study video.

Have you ever asked a current Major League hitter what it is he tries to accomplish in his daily routine before games?

I just think it's important to be flexible as a hitting coach in order to get results.

What you're saying here is, only you know what MLB hitters are feeling.....Because you talk to 'em and ask 'em.....

But, somehow, you've got Mike Epstein as clueless!..... Oh my...It's a wild and wacky world in which we live!....Well, go sell some more product! Smile

Are you defensive because you never have? You need to read what I post and please do not put words in my mouth, it's rude.

Never said Epstein was clueless. None of us can claim that we know it all.

Just trying to have a civil discussion on hitting. Thought this forum was to help people who have questions.

You may have written a lot of posts on this site, but that does not make it okay for you to be rude. Some people that read these posts probably just see you as clutter.

But please continue, you may learn something if you allow yourself to.
