All  co-educational postsecondary institutions that receive Title IV funding (i.e., those that participate in federal student aid programs) and that have an intercollegiate athletics program, must submit athletic department data annually as required by the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act (EADA).

There is a EADA tool that allow interested parties to search and review schools of interest.

https://ope.ed.gov/athletics/#/

The link below is a blog that outlines key components of EADA

Upon uploading the 2021 EADA data there might be some interesting observations.

We use EADA for 4 specific items.

  1. Validate Roster size (Website vs EADA Compliance), note schools receiving federal funding must report the number of players that participated in varsity activities.
  2. Number of Undergrads (Men/Women)
  3. Expense by Sport
  4. 5 or 10 year baseball spend

I did a quick look at Mississippi State:

Based on our extraction in March 2021, there were 46 players on the roster, subsequent sync during the summer

Upon loading the EADA, you will notice they reported 48 players participating in 2021, probably 2 non-rostered that practiced with team.

But here is a more scary thing , if you are doing research today, they only have 38 players listed on their website.

Mississippi State Website

Note, we implemented this feature because in 2016 when Coastal Carolina won, they only have 29 players listed on their website. So my question was, what happened to the 6 players, as for we had them on the snapshot that we collected at the beginning of the season.

I knew of 2 players, one played against my son in high school.  The other player I knew the following year, as for he played with my son in 2019 at Mercer Community College. He was injured in 2016.

Note, I always tell people, the websites are not as accurate as you may think.

Trust But Verify

CBI,

Great stuff.  You've laid out a process that many recruited families should be looking at.   We did something very similar with the same govt data available 10 years ago to make sense of it for our particular case.  It is never a bad idea to follow the money.  Everybody has their own priorities and metrics, but you give folks a great process to follow and a way to verify information that a coach shared (or didn't share) as the case may be.

We are noticing that whomever is managing the websites sometimes delete players from the roster, even if said player has played some games.

Here is a good example of them corrupting the website

Landon Jordan no longer with MSU

Landon was removed from the 2021 roster, but he has stats

We keep the record and tag it.

You can also get the roster size taken from EADA info on: https://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/

Very helpful for those schools that use JV and even V to boost enrollment.

@nycdad the jv roster size normally is not included in the EADA count unless...

EADA Criteria:

Participants
Students who, as of the day of a varsity team's first scheduled contest (A) Are listed by the institution on the varsity team's roster; (B) Receive athletically related student aid; or (C) Practice with the varsity team and receive coaching from one or more varsity coaches. A student who satisfies one or more of these criteria is a participant, including a student on a team the institution designates or defines as junior varsity, freshman, or novice, or a student withheld from competition to preserve eligibility (i.e., a redshirt), or for academic, medical, or other reasons. This includes fifth-year team members who have already received a bachelor's degree.
