Hi All,
Long time lurker, first post.
My 13 year old son has been doing long toss and a little pitching since the conclusion of the season. He has been working on his change up and 2 seam fastball in particular.
In the past he has gotten very little movement on the two seam. Anyway, he has been experimenting with it and has found something that seems to work. He takes his middle finger and knuckles it on top of the ball and then throws it with his normal two seam motion. The ball looks like a nice juicy fastball as it comes in, then as it hits the plate, the ball drops. The speed is slightly slower than his 4 seam fastball and the break is fairly sharp. It is a repeatable pitch for him.
He does throw a knuckle curve, but, the movement on that is less sharp, and the speed is significantly less.
He says he uses the same two seam arm mechanics. I can't watch the mechanics and catch the ball at the same time, so I don't know for sure if he is changing what he does with his arm.
Question: What is this? A two seam? A variation on the knuckle curve? Most importantly, is this safe for him to throw? He wants to use it in fall ball when he gets up on a batter.
Thanks for your help.
