sometimes it's the smell of the grass, the sun warming your face as you throw. the thinking aspect of the game is catchey. or the fact that the best hitter of all time was unsuccesful 6 out of ten times, so you feel ok with failure.the fact that i must have influenced at least two kids to love the game as well. the team aspect is important to me as well. the fact that it's the same game they played in 1903, with better gloves and balls.
but for me at different times ,it's different things that i love about the game.

but as tr said it is the BEST game.

TR, I'm glad to see you back on the Forum.
I Know you've had a rough time this year, And may God Bless You and your Family.

The reason I like baseball.
There's no time clock limit.

It's a Team sport, And an Individual sport at the same time.

It is a more demanding sport Mentally.

It is an anything can happen Game at any time during the Game.
So you better watch are you miss it.

Ooooh, I'm going to like this thread! I suppose there are many reasons why baseball is such a great game. It provided a common passion for my son and I. It's a game, like TR says, that requires 'baseball smarts' as much as raw talent. It's a game where heart comes into play. It's a game where outcomes can change rapidly. As EH says, it's a game where a player can shine individually but where a team needs to play to make an impact. It's fans, leather, dirt, sunshine, grass, sun, heat, cold, wind, rain, music, hotdogs, cheers, hopes, failures, successes, heart, athleticism, dreams, and the BEST game in the world!
AK - great question Smile

To me baseball transcends time. It connects generations and makes people feel young again. It is a metaphor for the wide open spaces and freedom that we enjoy from this great land of ours. Most importantly, it makes an intuitive connection with our children the first time they are exposed to it. There is something inexplicably compelling and enchanting about a ball traveling toward a bat. Mark Twain could not have dreamed of a better story to tell. The icons of the game. Ruth, Gehrig, Mays, Mantle, and Gibson. Dimaggio and Williams. The names themselves need no further explanation.

I'll never forget when my kids were first exposed to the game. It was a beautiful spring Sunday in April. My folks had picked up a plastic bat and ball and my brothers and I were pitching to my oldest who was around four yrs. old at the time.
My youngest son who was 2 and 1/2 just insisted that he be given his turn at bat as well. He didn't even know what we were doing other than he was going to participate and he loved it. By golly if he didn't have us all laughing our heads off every time he would hit the ball. That twinkle in his eye never left and why to me baseball is the greatest game.

There is not another sport to watch that every seat is a good seat. No matter where you sit there is a different perspective.

Every one on the field is potentially a game breaker every pitch.

You're only as good as your last pitch or last AB.

Every pitch has a meaning, a result, and influences the next.

There's constant communication both verbal and sign.

You can spit food waste (seeds) and get away with it.

And the list goes on............
How many of you folks remember the original version of this??

"Baseball, Hot dogs, Apple Pie & Chevrolet"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rYXmWY9HY4

As Chevrolet and Major League Baseball have both evolved and modernized through the decades, it’s only fitting to now hear “Free Agents, Rally Monkeys, Fantasy Leagues and Chevrolet.”

Now, THAT is what it's all about!! A "Love Affair"

I love football - and boxing.

But there is something different about baseball.

I dont know what it is - I am still trying to figure it out after 48 years.

It took hold long before I can remember anything else - and it hasnt changed a bit.

I can sit and talk with my dad about one player - or one game - or one moment - for the thousandth time - and it still seems fresh and real. Every time.

Cant really figure it out.

What makes baseball so great?
There's so many way's for a player to contribute to the team.

A key hit, Are a diving catch.
A great throw from the outfield to nail the runner at the plate.
A back handed stab at third base and throw across the infield for the out.
Throwing a shut out are perfect game, And then hitting a grand slam to win the game in the bottom of the 9th.

And all that and more can be done by One Player.
Is that cool are what?

Before reading jersey dad, first thing that came to mind was also Field of Dreams, and for posterity, it says:

"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again. Oh people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come."

And since Auld Lang Zyne is really more Scottish (ie Robert Burns) than German, "We'll drink a cup of kindness yet for times gone by." , and prayers to Rizzi and family.

Happy New Year.

My initial thought as to why baseball is so great is that it is something that can be shared and loved by the entire family. No matter what else is going on in our lives, baseball brings my entire family together. But the more I think about it, it is much bigger than that. I truly feel that you don't play the game of baseball, you live it. When people ask me why I am so fanatical about baseball, I simply respond that when you are a baseball player, it isn't what you do, it is who you are. Baseball players live and die for their sport more than any other, for all of the reasons that have been listed. I know for myself that by the end of the fall season I am excited about the break, the chance to do something else. But within 7-10 days I already miss it. I start to count the days until spring ball, and it cannot come fast enough.
To those who don't truly love the game, many of the comments here can seem like cliches; to those who love it, these aren't cliches ---- they're pale attempts to encompass the wonder of The Greatest Game.

It's an individual sport played as a team, with all the advantages and demands of both.

It's the only sport that can embrace and star the body types of David Exckstein, Lee Smith, Kirby Puckett....and John Kruk.

It's Chess With Sweat. Every pitch changes the situation and the field shifts in tune. The managers may move and countermove, but the game rests with the players. Delightfully, there is time between each pitch for the fans to analyze, discuss, and savor.

Baseball can be enjoyed on so many levels, from the casual fan excited only by key strikeouts and home runs, and in gradual steps to men such as Red Schoendist who have made baseball their lives.

It's order, fairness, and tradition. Christy or Babe or Satchel could appear on a field right now and feel quite at home.

There is no clock, there's no 'running a few plays' to run out the clock, no keep-away with the ball to prevent the other team from scoring. You give the other guy his 27 outs No Matter What. It's fair.

It's family. I inherited my love for the game from my Father; my son got a double shot. It's extended family, as witnessed here, at games....and anytime one of us has walked up to a complete stranger wearing something that indicates they're a fellow fan of 'our' school or pro team and started a conversation.

And none of this even touches what we all feel watching our sons play. Or what I feel every time I look at the photo of my Dad and son, that special Christmas when Aeden was 8 and Dad was dying of cancer, poring over the team signed 1951 Giants ball that Dad had just given Aeden for Christmas. And remember what Aeden said --- "I'll be giving this to my grandson."
Its the only sport I know where you can sit with a total stranger and and instantly connect. His or her son can be on the other team and it doesn't matter. Which one is your son? He's the one at 2nd base. Ok nice looking kid. Thank you, which one is yours? He's playing rf today. Thats great what year is he? On and on the conversation goes. By the end of the game you find yourself pulling for his or her's son to get a hit or make a nice play. You feel the tension in the air when their kid gets up just like it was your own child. And you pull for them just as hard. We are all in the same boat. We love our children and we all want then to be sucessfull at the thing they love. Baseball. And we know how important it is to us and we know it is just as important to that perfect stranger you just met. And by the end of the day they will never be a stranger again. I met a great guy this weekend at the PG showcase. His son is an 09 ss from Florida. He plays on the Orlando Scopions team in the summer. He hits from the Left side and he is a very good player. And I had another kid to pull for the whole weekend. And the list will continue to grow. And out there now there are people pulling for my son as well that before this weekend had no idea who he was. But we will never be strangers again. Baseball is a game that pulls people together. Players and families and coaches as well. Baseball is one big family that only will continue to grow over time if you allow it to. I have so many more sons of posters here that I now pull for. Baseball is awesome because it is not just about your son. It is awesome because it is about all the boys and all the parents. Baseball is a family.
Nice post, Coach May.

Baseball, and having kids, has had a very positive impact on me. It's hard to be a cynic when your kid has just pitched a shutout, or had a game-winning hit.

As a coach, though, it was a little different experience. There were definitely some cut-throat parents at ages 10-14 or so. But for the most part, these parents who couldn't cope (and their kids who tend to mimic them) fell by the wayside so now at the higher levels it has become more pleasant again. A full circle from T-Ball.

Baseball has allowed me to view the world through the eyes of a kid again. And just what's wrong with rose-colored glasses?

It does make a difference in the make up of the team and the parents as to what the experience is for everyone. I can remember my son's 11 year old all-star summer. There were some parents who were plain nasty and mean and I was team mom. I told his coach that if that was our first all-star experience, I'd never allow him to do it again. Fortunately for us, that was the only time we were ever part of a team with a bunch of bully parents and kids. As you say, often those kinds of parents fall by the wayside.
Sounds cliche' but I love baseball because it is truly America's game. Just as America was built on the combination of embracing individualism and team work....so is the game of baseball. It is simple, yet complex. It is the perfect combination of both physical and mental prowness. There is such a sense of American history in the game of baseball, it is humbling. And, there is no other sport, IMO, where the National Anthem played prior to the game means more, than in the game of baseball....America's game.

It is also the game where a dad could bond with his three daughters. A game that made me look forward to whenever my dad would need a car fill up at the service station, because I would get my mini poster of a Philadelphia Phillie with each fill up at the neighborhood Sunoco station. Baseball is childhood memories for me. It is Denny Doyle, Larry Bowa, Greg Luzinski, Willie Montenez, Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton. It is a blue transistor radio stuck in my pocket so I could listen to the ballgame while walking home from Woodlawn elementary school. It is my first "crush" (Jay Johnston). And it is my first tragedy (Roberto Clemente). I love baseball because it helped my dad deal with the ultimate cosmic joke....an athlete father who was given three non-athletic daughters. It was a way to help us all bond in the one way we could. I love baseball because it is what envelopes my childhood memories and helped define our family.

After a hard, stressful day at work, I can be reborn at a baseball game. It changes my attitude, it stimulates my brain, fresh air, competition...

Umpires have a say, but can't control the outcome. It isn't skating or gymnastics or basketball...

The fielders are positioned based on where the pitcher is pitching. Pitcher has to execute, hitter has to battle, defense has to make plays, hitter has to take advantage of pitcher's mistakes, or give himself up to advance runners. There are many, many, many one on one confrontations rolled into a team sport.

Baseball is the ultimate escape from the trials and tribulations of everyday strife. It is, the national pastime...

I can sit down at the start of a baseball game as a stressed out mental case and stand up two hours later an invigorated motivator.

It is the elixir of life...
I like it because you can watch it for 10 years, 20 years, 30 years ... and then still see something happen in a game that you've never seen before.

I like the intricacy of the rules and the scoring.

And like many others, I love the bonding opportunities it provides -- and passing on the love of the game to another generation.

It's beyond description ... and that's a good thing!
Great thread. Reading the posts, I kept nodding.

One thing I love about baseball is that to be successful at it requires many of the same skills and abilities and mental toughness required to be successful in life.

In baseball, it isn't just (or arguably even mostly) about physical ability. Savvy, intelligence, quick decisions, performing under pressure, focus, handling adversity, leadership, and teamwork are all required to play at a high level.

We can all think of innumerable examples of incredibly physically talented kids who couldn't succeed at baseball because of a lack of these qualities. And on the flip side, we've all seen less physically talented kids who rose to the highest levels because they had them.

I think baseball is unique among sports in this way.

So when my son plays baseball, I know he is doing something that many people think is just a game, but in reality is life training of the most valuable kind.

What parents wouldn't want their son playing a sport that required these things?
I guess it can be like any other endeavor - the thrill of winning and the agony of losing.

Those feelings are exciting. They never go away and they are there every day. If you really care about the game - and your involvement in it.

And baseball is a sport where it is hard to hide individually as well. That is scary - and fun too!

You either play well - or you stink. And most fans know it right away.

I also think it is fun to perform well (in any sport) - and to remind the people ( politey LOL) - that said you couldnt perform well and would never perform well - that they were wrong.

It may not be the main driver - but it sure is satisfying to shut the mouths of these no-nothing blowhards every so often. It is fun to watch them just scamper away - they just disappear - as the years pass by.

I guess it all comes down to competing. Not really baseball specific - but competing is cool IMO. Being in it is cool - and if you get lucky - achieving some success - even if it is fleeting - is cool too.
All 9 players will take their turn; you can't just send up your best hitter to take all the important at-bats.
If you get ahead you can't just 'stall' out the game by milking a clock; the other team still gets a chance; you have to get them out.
A 7 yr old can make a great play and a major leaguer can drop a pop-up that ends the game.

great replies folks.... cheers to y'all; (I feel like we are going around the table on Thanksgiving Day)

EH:

It's been awhile since I posted on this thread.
2006.
A lot has happened to us all and are players since then.
Players have been drafted, or signed to scholly's playing ball all over the country.
Son's played college ball and played in two regionals.
Had surgery, Redshirted his junior year and recovered.
Chopping at the bit for the Fall practice to start.
Hosted Minor Leaguers that are now in the big's.
It's been great the last few years And I'm glad we had a chance to experiance it first hand.
It's been fun.

The game itself is not for the meek or mild.
It can be very emotional and heartbreaking at times.
It can be the best feeling in the world, and then just tear your heart from your chest.
Excitement then dread then excitement again.
There's no middle ground in the game.
Call me a glutton for punishment,
But I love it just for that reason.

EH
I love the game for many reasons, I am a thinking man so I like that it's a thinking man's game. You have to be a team and when the team comes together and wins a hard fought game it's just the greatest feeling in the world. The sound of the ball hitting a bat or a glove is just magic to me.

Baseball also carries so much history in it in fact the reason I ever got into baseball was when my grandfather died of Lou Gehrig's disease I studied up on it and it just made me appreciate the game so much more.

It's also such a funny game sometimes because you can hit a ball harder than you've ever hit it before and be out or you can take an awkward swing and hit it off the end of your bat and get a base hit and an RBI. It's a game where anything can happen.

Orlando said another thing well, in what other sport would Kirby Puckett, David Ortiz or John Kruk be successful?

The game of baseball is the greatest thing ever and my absolute favorite is the start of the season (May for me) when we're playing in the cold Wyoming weather 45 degrees and in the rain when players truly show their dedication by continuing to play on even in those conditions. I just love rainy games, I don't know why but I just do.
