Hi all. my son is a 2015 RHP.  Last year at PG as a 14 yr old freshman, he was throwing 79.  Prior to the start of the season they evaluated him and he is sitting at 82 to 84 topped at 85.  They like his command, control, pitchability and his off speed pitches. (i am reading from a report from his showcase team).  it says needs to work on increasing velocity.  He will talk to them and probably get more info as to what they want him to do, but I was just curious, he will be 16 soon, what should he be throwing. What is average...what would be considered good etc.  From his past history he usually gains one or two mph once he gets in full swing of the season, he does band work, long toss, core and leg excercises, running.  Is there anything else he should be doing?   thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like your son is doing the right things and that he's on track to break the 90's.  As you probably are aware, he's at the age now where his body is maturing and he's going to be getting stronger more quickly than ever before.  So, in addition to good strength and conditioning routines, a good balanced diet is important with some emphasis on protein consumption and staying well hydrated.  By this time next year, I'd expect his velocity to be in the 90's. (of course a lot depends on his genetic make up, his size and talent)

Best wishes for you son, and you as a parent, . . enjoy the ride.

I believe your son has good velocity for his age. I would have him continue to work on his control and secondary pitches. His health and nutrition will do a lot to ensure his success. One of the most important things he can do is to keep his grades up. There are a lot of solid D1 pitchers throwing between 85 and 90.

Best of luck,

Ted

I am in agreement with skylark, there are so many things that go into it that it is very hard to predict what the outcome will be (in HS) as far as velocity.  I know lots of young pitchers who gained lots of velocity early in HS and then stopped as a junior, senior, and I know lots of young pitchers who gained a lot after they were in college.

Not much, but most of it depends on genetics, body type and physical maturity.

Sounds like he is doing everything he can do for now.

Best of luck.

Thanks guys.  I know there is no way to predict what he could throw in the future. I was just wondering if he is where he should be now for his age, if that makes any sense. For his age is his velocity average or better.  i know there are 2 pitchers on his team throwing mid to high 80's (of course they are 6'3 and built like linebackers) mine is 5'11 and really hasnt filled out yet But what is typical or is there a typical.

baseballmomx4, Or son is2015 as well and he is conditioning just as you say your son is. He has had great coaching not only as a position player but as a pitcher as well. He participates in a very intense off season pitching program.  He was recorded at 89 late fall of 2012 and has been clocked at 91 just a few weeks ago. He stands at 6ft and 180 lbs. I think velocity has a lot to do with dedication and hard work and being blessed with the tools to play. Sounds like your son is on the right track.

Baseballmomx4,

Just keep him healthy. As Ted22 said, good grades and throwing mid to high 80's to low 90 will definitely get him some looks from D1 schools. If he haves the drive he will have success. Is he going to participate in some PG events again this summer? I believe that is where he will get the best exposure. Good luck to him !!

We will be at East Cobb in July as well. Our son will be attending the PG Jr. Nationals in Minnesota June 11th and 12th. We are excited for this opportunity for him. Our son did an individual showcase last August and it was really beneficial to see the comments and the feedback for him and see where he needed to improve his game. I think its such a great tool for these young boys to see where they stand amongst their peers.  Good luck to your son in his upcoming summer season.
