Son is a high school senior. He had to miss his entire junior year with an injury. He was a starter as a sophmore. He also had to miss summer ball and showcases which hurt his recruitment chances. He is finally fully recovered and back at full strength for his senior season. What should be his next step for his recruitment process? He has sent out several letters but not much response.

Sportsman07,

The person who can probably help your son the most at this time is his high school coach. The question is always, will he be willing and able to help much?

We see many cases of good players missing part or all of their Junior year. Those that experience that problem fully understand the advantages of being identified before the junior year. Heck, now days there are kids who have verbally committed before they even play their junior year.

Anyway, that doesn’t help you much!

The fact that your son started as a sophomore, means your coach must think highly of him. There are unsigned senior events and other possibilities, but your coach can help a lot right now. I’d go talk to him, if you haven’t already. Also if there are any other coaches or scouts who know your son well, I would contact them too. Asking for help shows desire.

Tough luck about the injury. But if he has recovered, there is plenty of baseball left after high school. Is he academically qualified (SAT and gpa?, registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse?) Colleges recruit right up through the start of classes, although the odds get a little slimmer after they fill the spots from the pro draft in June, and it will be hard to see him play during your high school season (a videotape might open a door or two, though). If that is too hairy a wait for your family, why not get him into the best JC program around, and with his quick hands and skills, he may get picked up by a college to his liking that fits his ability level. As many have said on this board, the "race" perceived by parents that seems to end with the high school Senior year, really does not even get started until then.
Sportsman07 - I just want to echo PG's advice. TN is a state that is full of great schools and a lot of scouts. I would bettcha that if there's a local scout that is familiar with your son and finds out he's not signed, he can help. Those scouts and coaches refer kids all the time! You have a wonderful JUCO system there as well, if that's the route he decides to try.
