Hello everyone,

Happy New Year!!! I haven't had an opportunity to visit this site lately as I've been pretty busy/involved with sports, games, practices for basketball and baseball etc. I received such good advice for my initial post "What Would You Do?" posted in October/November, I promised I would give you all an update on my son's baseball situation. Here it is:

My son has been playing basketball for his school and they are right in the midst of the season. Well the baseball (A/B) teams have been playing in tournaments. My son was not able to attend the Christmas baseball tournament because he was in a basketball tournament during the same time. The baseball coach understands that the committment is to basketball since it is basketball season. Well the baseball team is in another tournament this weekend which began on Friday. My son played his basketball game on Friday, then traveled an hour (traffic) to another school to support his baseball team at the tournament. He did not suit up as he had just finished basketball.

Saturday, he suited up for the game and he got the opportunity to play in his very first high school baseball game. Big Grin

I was in shock since he is one of two Student Manager's on the "A" team. I just set my mind to the fact that he would not be playing. He has not been able to practice with the baseball team at all due to his involvement with basketball. He played left field for two innings and was up at bat once. Unfortunately he struck out, but his teammates gave him some positive reinforcement and encouragement. He told me he was shocked as well. But he is on cloud nine right now and will play today and hopefully in the Championship. The "A" team that he plays with is very good and most of the players are big and strong. This should hopefully help my son to develop.

I just want to thank everyone for their great words of advice that helped us to look at the glass as half full instead of half empty . We know that when the actual season starts, he still may not play, but who knows what the future will bring.

Calsportsmom, thanks so much for the update! How wonderful that your son got to play and received encouragement from his teammates! Sounds like he made the right decision. Best wishes, and keep those updates coming!

For the benefit of those who did not read Calsportsmom's initial post, here it is:

So here's the latest in the saga with my son's freshman try-outs. The coach just recently had the 1st round of cuts. My son did not get cut, however,he was given a proposition which sounds pretty strange to me.

My son's name along with one other player was highlighted on the list of the players that made the cut. My son went to talk to the coach to inquire about why his name was highlighted. The coach told him that he has skills, has heart (more heart than all the boys trying out), and knows that my son has a love for the game of baseball, but that he needs a little work and with the talent of the boys trying out, my son would not make the 2nd cut, so the coach told him that he wants to make my son a student manager. The coach says that he wants to keep my son around him and the baseball field and that my son would help with practices and also work out, suit up for games etc. The coach said that he would be part of the team and on the roster, but he did not mention anything about playing time. This sounds weird to me. It's basically in my opinion a glorified name for a bat boy.

Well my son was thrilled (why I don't know) and accepted the postion without consulting with my husband and I. The question is does this sound like the coach is feeding my son a bunch of lies? has anyone heard of this type of situation before? My husband left a msg for the coach to talk to him so we will have a better understanding as to the coaches intentions. All my son wants to do is play baseball. It sounds like a waste of time to me. Maybe I am being too negative. Maybe the coach wants to keep him around because he sees potential. Everyone I need your help on this one please. What would you do?
