Trust me, I am all for cutting the cord. My husband constantly tells me, we are raising a man not a wimp. In this particular case, not only do we have to drive our son around, we also have a daughter who is very active in sports as well and who also attends school 30 minutes from home. In addition to that, they both play the piano which means lessons once a week. I'm sure you other parents can relate to what I am saying. We are not trying to baby him, we just need to make sure that being student manager is worth the time involved.
You are preaching to the choir CAl sportsmom. If my 13 year old made a decision that affected my schedule without consulting me I would strangle him. I work, my wife works, and we have two other kids. Busy every day and night anymore.
the transportation issues are valid concerns, especially if no team-mates are nearby. I didn't let my kids drive til 14, but may 13 is ok in a pinch ...not sure how it would go over in Cal tho
good luck

while i didn't mean to sound so rude with my first post. i didn't know he was 13 and went to school 30 min. away. that was some important info.to with hold and then ask what would you do?
i still say it's up to him wheather or not to do it, it takes no more time than if he made the team. you said you thought it could be a waste of time, anything kids do that is positive is never a waste of time in my opinion.
i am sorry for being so opinionated, but you did ask for it, the opinion i mean.

20dad,
I did not think what you said was rude. Everyone has an opinion and that's what I was looking for. I had so much info in my first post, I didn't even think about adding the issue with the commute time/distance etc. You're right it is ultimately up to him and if the coach is a man of his word, it will not be a waste of time. It will be win win situation for all.

13 and a freshman?? He probably has to compete against 15 yr olds... is he gifted or did you just start him young?? Maybe the coach sees a big upside... he's just really young.
if he's a freshman, let him drive ... are you trying to pamper him?
Bee> You've got to be joking. He can't drive around here until he's at least 16 although I wish he could drive right now
trojan-skipper- In our eyes, he's gifted. He started school at 4 years of age.

Oh come on let him drive! Kids around here drive tractors when they are 12. Get him a atv and he will be fine.
that school 30 minutes away?? NOT ANYMORE ... plus saving the earth @ 50 mi/gal
license? I'll show it if you can catch me

GW- Don't you think that Bessy powered blue truck would be perfect for Calsportsmom son? Just a thought (THAT MAKES ME CRACK UP!)

You gotta let them on there own before you make wimps out of'em.
Hey, don't be making fun of my better half (Wife). Which makes my son half Spartan.
