Although there has been a lot of speculation about the replacement, whomever it is will have his work cut out for him.

The prior coach had burn bridges with many people that could have helped in their recruiting. The NW part of the state had many talented players who would not even glance at the program.

People want to make excuses about the weather and how hard it is to recruit at ASU. Well, many coaches (WCU for example) overcome those concerns. If they hire a coach that is passionate for his program, players, recruiting and the game....he can be successful.

Surrey County coach is one to go after.
I have heard several names mentioned for the Appy State job. It would be inappropriate on my part to list them.

ANY DI program that comes open will generate a lot of interest, because there are so few DI head coaching positions to start with and even less that come open "cleanly."

As for the climate in Boone, I would agree with Braves comment. It would only be as tough as you choose to make it.

Appy's facility (ballfield) is nice, although the hike up for spectators is a pain!

I watched the APSU team during a weekend series this season and knew the program was in trouble. From the first inning of the first game of the series there were only 2 or 3 players up on the top step of the dugout. All the remaining players were sitting in the back of the dugout. I felt bad for all involved. It was evident that things were not good.

Appy State is not fulled funded (scholarships) so competing for a conference title will be difficult. However the campus and an ethusiastic coach could make the program competitive.
I saw them play in a weekend tournament at Winthrop the first of the season. One of the players hit a routine ball back to the pitcher and the player did not run it out...too bad because an errant throw pulled the 1st baseman off the bag. I knew right then that this team was in trouble.

The players they have recruited this year are all quality kids...I hope they will have an impact.
