What have you all had experience with the best way to promote college exposure? My son is a 6'7" 205 lbs RHP/1B/OF. Has good grades and wants to go to the next level in college. He is a junior this year and plays for a 5A high school. Beside his defensive talents he is an exceptional hitter. Always in the line-up and pounding the ball.

Is he related to Richie Sexson? Smile

I think showcases and/or selected college camps ought to do it for him. Obviously, if your summer team can travel to scouted tournaments, that will help as well.

College exposure in general

1. Play on a good summer team. Don't get caught up in the name of the team. Some are travel, AAU, elite, select etc... What you need to do is look at the schedule and find out who they are playing and where they are playing. That it is much more important because the scouts (pro & college) will both be there.

2. Go to high level showcases like the Perfect Game and Area Code stuff. They are the best places to get seen. Plus you will be going against the best the country has to offer. It will be a good way to gauge your ability as compared to others throughout the country.

Now if you are talking about a specific college that you want to notice you

1. Go to their camps. Virtually all schools offer some sort of camp and they use it as a fundraiser for the most part. Contact the head coach or the coach in charge of recruiting and ask about their camps. Tell them you are interested in attending their school. Go to the camp walk up to the one in charge of recruiting and introduce yourself and mention that you want to go there. He's going to give you some rundown of what's going on and the next part is very important - perform well at the camp.

2. Go to showcases these schools will be at. Basically it's the same process. Call school, find out which ones they will be at, introduce yourself and perform.

Now don't think this is a one time chance at the camp or showcase. It will probably take a couple of exposures at these to make an impression unless you are an absolute stud. You got to be persistent in getting seen and once the ball starts rolling then you can start taking visits and such.

Regardless of which route you take make sure that you look the part, walk the part and act the part. Be a yes sir / no sir guy, have your shirt tucked, have approriate shoes on clean, have a nice neat haircut. I know some coaches don't care about hair but I've never heard a coach say "man I don't like that kid - his hair isn't long enough". You don't know what that coach likes to see from a player but the safe look is a neat haircut. Then if you find out he's ok with long hair then let it grow.

Others will follow with probably better advice or more in depth but this should get you started on the right path.
At top left side of every page of the forums is a little green tab that pulls out & lists all the major categories of information within the "walls" of HSBBWEB.
And follow the advise by both the posters above!!
For my son, as a sophomore, he was asked to play with a team that was going to WWBA in Jupiter Fla. From there, PG (and every other outfit) invited him to showcase. We chose to send him to PG Underclass @ Baylor Univ., then PG Nationals, Marietta. They were wonderful!! His summer team also went back to 17U & 18U WWBA tournaments his junior year.
You guessed it!!...I'm a PG fan! Contact Jim Arp or Jerry Ford (PGStaff) here on hsbaseballweb.
Good luck to your son.
