Runner on first and two out. 0-2 on the batter. On the next picth the runner takes off for second, the batter swings and misses the pitch, the catcher also misses the ball and it rolls to the backstop. The batter breaks for first and the ump calls him out because 1st base was occupied. Is this the correct call? Does an attempt to steal 2nd leave 1st base unoccupied at that point?

trying to trick us?? With 2 outs it doesn't matter where the base runner is. Dropped third strike defense must throw to first to record out. It rolls to the backstop runner should be able to beat the throw.

Yes, with 2 outs it doesn't matter. Must throw to 1st to record an out!
Let's say there was 0 or 1 out: Then in this situation = batter is out and runner advances at own risk. First base was occupied AT TIME OF PITCH regardless of stealing or not.

No, I was not trying to trick you. This actually happened in a game and both umps agreed that the batter was out.

Then both umpires were wrong...........Its a shame that 2 umpires would not know this basic rule of baseball.......
