I realize this is a real stretch, but assume the runner on 3rd was stealing and touched the plate before the batter hit the ball. Would the run still not count?
I believe that the run, in the case of stealing home. wold only count if the runner crossed home before the pitcher started his wind-up or delivery motion, otherwise it would be a contiuation of the play(out at first) and the run would not count...btw, just my thoughts as I am not an umpire but am curious about this call
In the case of the runner stealing, he would have to touch the plate prior to the "time of the pitch" which is when the pitcher starts his motion to the plate, for his run to count. (Time of Pitch is better explained in the rule book)
Correct in both situations. If the BR is tagged or thrown out before reaching first for the third out then no run. On the stealing runner then he has to make home before the time of pitch. Breaking after he has started his motion makes a R3 at the time of pitch so even if he makes it home before the ball is hit, it wouldn't count.
