The assumption you are making is that the scholarship offer is made verbally. In reality, a school can "officially" offer a scholarship in writing at any time. There is no restricted time period for written notification of a the intent to offer an athletic grant. The Letter of Intent cannot, of course, be signed by the athlete prior to the intial signing date in that sport. For example, we have a local basketball kid who was offered by the U of A in his freshman season and has "committed".Check the D1 manual Section 13.10 under recruiting for clarification of this issue.
Justbaseball, you seem to know alot about the whole draft process and recruiting process. I was wondering if you know why Donald Brandt was not drafted. At the games I've seen him play this year and last, he has absolutely dominated. And if they did not draft him because he signed with SCU, then why did a bunch of other players who commited with colleges get drafted?
While I've met his father (and he's a really nice guy!) and him, I don't know what they told the scouts regarding his signability. I saw him pitch 2 or 3 times this year and I thought he was excellent. I also saw scouts at one of his games so they undoubtedly know about him.

There are a lot of factors that go into the draft. Signability, projection and more. While he is an excellent pitcher, perhaps the scouts felt he needed 3-4 more years at SCU to be "ready." Or, perhaps he said he wouldn't sign no matter what? Thats only a guess on my part as I am not qualified to evaluate him nor do I know what he/his family told the scouts.

In any case, I'm really looking forward to watching him at SCU and hope he has a great career there. I know the coaches at SCU are very happy to have him.

From what I have gathered, your son is Erik Davis, right? If he is, what would you say was the most important thing that helped him get noticed by Stanford. Did he go to the stanford all-star camp? Or was it a Perfect game showcase? I was just wondering because I am 2006 graduate and I just went to the perfect game sunshine west, but didnt get accepted to the stanford camp this summer (hopefully next summer). Thank you for your help.

Lefty - Yes, Erik.

Hard to say the most important thing. He did go to the all star camp and that definitely helped because he did well there. You don't need to worry if you're an 06 as he didn't go until last summer before his senior year.

He did well at PG events, TeamOne, and Area Codes. All of those helped as well. He also went to their winter pitching camp as a Junior. But he went to other pitching camps in the area and in Southern California and all seemed to have some interest after those. In my opinion, PG and NorCal were the first to put him on the map so to speak.

At what point did Stanford notice?...I really don't know. They may have noticed as late as last summer, or they may have noticed well before...we live only 15 minutes from campus.

We'll probably never know.
I know a prep basketball player in 9th grade who is a girl that has already been told by an ACC schools when she is ready to come to school, they have a scholarship waiting for her.

There are a number of "innocent ways" to meet or bump into a college coach and there are no rules that really prohibit a college coach from saying "ya, we would offer you a scholarship when you are ready, good luck with high school"

This is done to simply make a student excited about the prospects of attending that school in 4 years (as opposed to a competitor's school), nothing more, nothing less.
OK..if we want to use "official offer" as the criteria then we must be referring to the issuance of a Letter of Intent.
The Letter of Intent must be signed within 14 days of its issuance.
Therefore, the first day a scholarship may be "officially offered" this year in baseball is 14 days prior to the initial signing date of November 10....or October 27,2004.
The key words here are "official" and trust". I know of 3 2005 players verbally committed to 1 of the nations finest programs. To have this particular school commit to a player is money in the bank, even though it cannott be "official until the LOI is signed on the appropriate date. "Trust" enters into a verbal commitment which can legally happen via email, letter or on campus visit.
