OK...my limited knowledge has got me confused (not unusual)...I hear that a coach can't talk to a player until he's a senior...OK...if so, then how do you see Sophmores and even Freshmen committing early to programs? Son is a 2012, so I'd say we're just in the middle of this journey...what and who can communicate? Somebody must be talking to players before they are seniors? Thanks for entertaining my ignorance.

Hi scdigger,

You can find several discussions in previous threads on this and I am sure others will chime in here again. Not sure about all cases but I believe these early commitments mostly occur from the players visiting the college. These visits occur through attending camps at these schools or through unofficial visits which can occur any time you are able to set up a visit with the schools recruiting coordinator. Communication is pretty much a one way street (player to coach) until the summer between junior senior year so the player has to take the initiative and be actively communicating with the coach. Until this time the coach is limited to very generic communication such as sending out flyers about the program and invites to camps.
Player's or parents can call the coach at anytime. The problem is getting the coach to answer your call, as he cannot return calls. Arrangements can always be made to communicate, through a third party, by email is permitted at anytime, either way, and ,as mentioned above, during on campus "unofficial visits" or camps on campus, coaches and players are permitted to talk. This is where most early commitments occur. Try this link for more information:

Unfortunately it is a lot of information. Good luck!
