At a recent game, a group of us 06 parents were talking. What happens to the players that a coach has looked at when he leaves a school? Does the list stay with the school or does the coach take it with him?
On the other end, what happens to the incoming freshman class of recruits? They have no college history for the new coach to look at.

Ethically and legally, the recruiting list belongs to the school.
A really good recruiting coach has put together a group of players who he feels will be good for that program and has already decided with the Head Coach who they will recruit.
One coach who was recruiting my son left mid June to go from one school to the next. He told us the only reason he called after he switched schools was because my son was being recruited by his new employer.
Remember this is a job as well as a career and they have to follow agreements with former employers just as we do.
I think a lot depends on if coach was the recruiting/assistant or a head coach. My son has an HS '05 friend who received an offer from a mid size DI this year, coach retired, new coach took away the offer. New coach has offered to another kid we know at the same position. I do believe most coaches leave behind the recruiting "lists", however the new guy in town may have a different opinion of who he wants to recruiit.
lafmom,
Being from KY you should remember the change of head coaches at UK and how things changed.
True the coach works for the college and has to follow their policy and procedures but any coach is only as good as the players he is able to recruit. No coach worth his salt would accept a job with the understanding he was obligated to recruit from the previous coaches list. The “list” is really nothing more than a coach's "opinion". When coaches leave, I would venture to say the slate is wiped clean and the new coach and the old coach are free to recruit whomever. I’m sure the new coach will talk to the players that were recruited by the previous coach but “negotiations” will start over. If an NLI has already been signed the player and the college are bound by that NLI for one year because the NLI is between the player and the college... no matter what happens to the coach.

Fungo made two good points and in my experience they ring-true:

1) If you have signed an NLI you are good for one year.

2) If you have NOT signed an NLI, then it will be the new coaches' decision as to whether to keep you or tell you that he no longer reuqires your services.

The new coach will want to pull from his list of recruits first, but will certainly take a look at the out-going coaches list. There may be some of the same players on both lists.

Fungo, UK is a very good example of how recruiting changes from coach to coach. Coach Madison and Coach Cohen did recruit entirely different kids and you are absolutely correct - there were lots of changes. Some I've thought were good, others I haven't been crazy about, personally. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing. I told someone the other night, new sheriff wants his own deputies! Don't blame him. Every coach sees things through different eyes. Like you pointed out, the kid I referred to had not signed his LOI yet - unfortunately for him!
I am a little confused. When a player signs his NLI, he agrees to play for that school and ends his recruitment with other schools. He is bound by the agreemnet to play for one year and the coach is bound to keep that agreement for one year. The coach can take back this agreement?
And FYI, I checked, the lists belong to the school. Does not necessarily mean that the coach leaving doesn't have a copy. Does not mean you will get a call from the new coach either.
Big Grin
Son got a call from the recruiting coordinator from school A, an Ivy. A week or two later the head coach resigns and becomes associate head coach at school B. A week or two later son gets bombarded with recruiting stuff, media guide, camp invite, letters, etc. from school B.

Have List. Will Travel.
