CA HS CIF playoff game today...
Top of the seventh inning. Home team leading 5-4. Visitors batting. R1 no outs. Left-handed batter lays down a sacrifice bunt on the third base line and gets thrown out at first base. R1 flies all the way around and dives into third base safe and ball gets away. Plate umpire up the line and appears to signal R1 to go home for ball out of play and tie up the game.
Instead plate umpire signals R1 to go back to first base and calls batter out for being out of the box when he bunted. Of course there were no batters box lines at all and it was a sacrifice bunt.
Umpire never signaled anything at all or called immediate dead ball when the play happened. Let the entire play play out and called it afterwards. Chaos and emotions were pretty crazy on both sides.
Next batter hit into a double play and game was over. Honestly didn't care whether they won or lost, but to have that opportunity taken away from them was a bunch of bull in my book. Not sure how you call that in that situation without a batter stepping full-bore on the plate and obviously a lefty doesn't do that. What really bothered me was the Umpire not calling it until after the entire crazy play was over. Thoughts?
