At what age does recruiting start? My son is 14 and just starting to play high school baseball. The school he plays for is well-known in the state, with a lot of scouts at the Varsity games. Though, since he will be playing on JV, I was wondering if scouts even bother with kids at that age.

Not only does he play baseball for his school, but also on a tournament team and although I know other team's coaches have noticed him, when does the 'real' recruiting start?

Thanks!

Personally, I think it is too early for you to start worrying about it. Until a player makes and contributes to the HS Varsity, all you should be doing is working on getting better and working to make the varsity team. My son is a sophmore who was a starting varsity pitcher last year. Went to his first PG showcase this fall. I think this year's HS season is the first I will really start to focus on it. Summer between Soph. and Jr. year is when I will probably kick things into gear.

Not sure if every college coach thinks this way, but our summer team went to a showcase tournament at Univ. of South Carolina this summer. One of the assistant coaches was talking to our coach and told him he doesn't even look at 15 yr. olds. He said there are too many changes between then and when they are 17 or 18. The big guys become average size and the smaller guys may be a lot bigger by then. My 15 yr. old went on to pitch a 3 hit shut out against a varsity team that we played. The coach wound up staying the whole game and taking notes, but we never heard anything from him.

Anyway, I think if your son is lighting up the radar gun or can hit with some pop, I wouldn't start worrying about it yet. I really don't think scouts will show up to a JV game. Make sure you make the varsity team first.
