I know my son has had discussions with his college coaches (Scholarship RHP;D-1) about placement. As a pitcher there seems to be some concern with which programs dont abuse their staffs. Also they have explained that they want to get the upper classmen placed first. When is a reasonable time to have our offers in from these programs and when is it time to worry if we havent been signed for the summer? Thx

The Bad news: Offers start in August, and by now, teams in most of the upper summer leagues, and there are several such leagues out there, have gotten pretty close to filling their rosters. The Cape is #1, but there are 6-10 others that seem to be grouped in an upper tier, albeit behind the Cape. A few college coaches have told us this year they won't place their pitchers until spring, to see how many innings they throw. I'm not sure how that will work but spots do open in the spring due to grades, girl friends, etc.

Good News: EVERYBODY is always looking for good pitching, and summer teams need lots of it. In our league (Valley League), the roster limit is 28 and we will carry 15-16 pitchers as we do not believe in over-working our pitchers. We want to send them home healthy.

Some college coaches are very proactive in finding spots for their players, and some aren't. It varies from school to school. Generally speaking, players at D-1 schools with a good track record have no problem finding spots. We have some players coming this summer that had 3-5 different offers.

If you have more questions, feel free to shoot me a PM. My very-nonpaying-but-lots-of-fun job is being GM of a summer team.
