You can sign all the way up to the time your son steps on campus. It really depends upon what level your son is going to play and how patient you all are.

D1's and the top D2's are generally done in the fall, with a few grabbing players in the spring--especially the D2's. NAIA, D3, and D2's will grab some in the fall of senior year, but seem to wait until the spring to see who falls through the cracks and they will grab players all the way up to their college's deadline for accepting a student.

My son started getting heavily recruited by d2's in late May, and he is still getting calls as of Friday. His friend is currently being recruited by D3's.

I've been posting on here for almost a year now since my nephew was named a "preferred walkon" at a D1 school in FL. The reason I say that is I had asked for a true explanation of the term "preferred walk on" and was given valuable insight from those who post here. So.. to answer your question... in short you can sign anytime up until school starts.

My nephew was just offered and accepted a scholarship to the school of his dreams right in our backyard. The school he dreamed of playing for since he was 4 years old.

He had a tremendous senior season (after missing entire junior year to acl injury) and was named all County etc. The interest by this school was always there but the $$$ were not. As the draft approached and it was apparent that this school was going to lose at the least 4 commitments, money became available.

So... in his case it was pure luck this other school didn't offer him money in the long run.
