When my older son was in high school we kept hearing about all these high school kids who were throwing 90+. But when we'd meet them and see them pitch they'd be lucky if they broke 80. Now I have a 12 yr old who played 12's last yr and is staying at 12 this yr. We've watched a lot of 11 and 12 yr old tournament games all div.s. And I've hardly seen anyone go over about 62 in 11's (my estimation, no gun) and maybe 65 in 12's. I did see guns on some of the high school kids and we check our 12's now and then so I have an idea what 70+ and 90+(college kid) looks like. My question is, If there are so many 12's out there throwing 70+, where do they go when I'm watching?

They go the way of many things.....many are myths....some are outright lies or exaggerations at a minimum.....some are close to legitimate, but cant pitch at that speed...I knew of one young man at 16-17 who could hit the gun at 90....but not the catcher....he cruises comfortably at 82-84 and has a nice college career going for him.....
A question to all of you folks who have had sons play in elite baseball--How common is it for you to have a 12 yo pitcher throw in the low 70's? Especially one that isn't over 5'10"?We play on an average AAA team and have yet to see anyone overpowering. I keep telling my son that they are around but the only fast one we've seen is bigger than my husband. Eek
There was a 12yo. on my son's Little League team last summer that hit 72mph on a Jugs gun in a game. He consistently cruised between 68-70 mph. unless he was really jacked-up.

Everyone exaggerates... We only faced two other kids that threw anywhere near that hard. We heard about all of these other teams with kids throwing in the 70's, but when we faced them and they were clocked with a good radar gun they were only hitting 65 or so. From 46ft., a 70 mph pitch gets there real quick!
