I can think of some outstanding threads on this site with regards to hitting. Of course I can think of a few not so good. It would be the same regardless of where you look. The key then is to have an idea of what you are looking for, who you think presents arguments that you agree or disagree with and why, and naturally, all of this is based upon your own belief system. That belief system often is wrong in my opinion if compared to closer analysis of what MLB players do. Looking for hitting info is then really a fun journey. We all have a lot to learn. JMHO!

Some things to think about on that journey:

  • Identify what you believe in first.
  • Find a site that isn't adversarial. On some sites the messenger kills the message.
  • Find one or two people that you might not agree with totally but that you respect and bounce some ideas off of them. I do that at times with Bluedog.
  • There isn't a dumb question but take the time to explain the question so that everyone understands. I've seen this lead to some huge arguments.
  • Test anything that you hear. Use video!
  • When using video, don't argue with some "experts" because I've seen some of them use the same video to demonstrate 2 or 3 different theories depending upon which side of the fence they are currently standing on.
  • Re test again!

Have fun with hitting and baseball in general. At times we disect the game to the point that it isn't fun anymore. JMHO!

Coach, I very much agree!!......And, the biggest culprits, IMO, are the coaches standing on third base messing with the hitters.....Leave 'em alone and let 'em hit coaches!!

You don't have to tell 'em they just swung at a pitch at their eyes......Trust me, they know it!!

If pitching is the art of disrupting the timing of the hitter, then third base coaches (and parents at the fence) are often the best pitchers at the park.

Many high school and college coaches will tell the media that they have a team that cannot hit well so they will revert to small ball. That is great, I like small ball. However, what they often do is so mess with their hitters timing they self-fulfill their prophecy of a poor hitting club.

Signs you are that coach...
1. You have the hitter look to you before every pitch in a game.
2. You take and fake bunts a lot.
3. You have negative body language or even verbally berate when a kid swings at a ball in the dirt or over his head or takes a strike.
i have to disagree with baseballpapa, or at least question his comment?? as the coach of a team in our area known to produce runs, we do show bunts and fake/take for several reasons. 1. to see how the defense moves to set up a slash. 2. by seeing the defense move we've been able to double steal 2nd/3rd because theyr'e coverage told us to. 3. to allow my kids to see where they can bunt. 4. we're an average hitting team (by average our number compared to those in our district are almost identical offensively) but we have strong pitching (team era is 2.33) with 75 SB in 79 attempts) so this idea of showing and getting people moving benefits us.

so in your opinion, am I hurting my hitters??
Sorry turnin2, didn't mean to disparage what you described. In fact, when I coach I do the same thing. We show early to see what will happen to take advantage. Also, I find in HS ball that if you show bunt once early you might get the third baseman out of position for the rest of the game.

I was referring to doing it continually. Although I do what you describe, I also, every game go dummy on signs. I simply let the players hit. I flash bunt signs, takes, etc. and yet the players know they are hitting away. (Yes, sometimes that has to be taken off in mid-inning).

However, I stick by what I said, so many HS coaches try to do too much and simply wreck timing.
We have one attitude---we want to have our kids hacking--they were not selected to be with us because they could not hit---except in certain situations they are hacking and we very rarely use the take sign---we do not have a problem with first pitch swinging either, did any of you see Moises Alou last night?,

Oh really????.......Deaconspoint, care to tell us just where you look for the real deal??

Blue, I had you all wrong. Let me begin with a formal appology for knocking you in another thread. I stated that I thought your posts were a waste of time. That opinion was based soley on the few interactions I had in my short time here. A little research and some education from others and I have found that to be untrue. A rush to judgement on my part. I was wrong.

As for my statement in that other thread that you so kindly quoted here. What was meant is that I think most here are responsible enoough to realize the source of the information given is for the most part anonimous. While it is far better than the arguements and one sided banter found in many other places, it still needs to be verified. I'm not saying that the information gained here is not valuable, it is.
