From the famous Simon and Garfunkel song Mrs. Robinson:
quote:
Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio.
A nation turns its lonely eyes to you (ooo ooo ooo).
What's that you say, Mrs. Robinson ?
"Joltin' Joe has left and gone away" (Hey hey hey, hey hey hey).

Picking up on a theme started by infielddad, Jimmy Rollins attempt at Joe D's hitting streak has ended. My view is it is a record that will never be broken. Tiger Woods won four consecutive majors over the course of two years and the media did not seem to want to give him full credit for acheiving Golf's "Grand Slam."

Curious if Rollins had made it to 56 games would his record been viewed the same as Joe D or would he have been treated much the same way as Tiger Woods? What do you think?

I think that is he would have hit in 45 straight there would be a media explosion that would have brought the accomplishment to the forefront.

We as a society are very non-chalent about 2nd or 3rd place until they get real close, and very protective toward 1st. Now.......add some "juice" to the 2nd place guy and you add some discussion to the topic. Wink
Perhaps if Jimmy's quest were immortalized by a song? Like DiMaggio.

And where are the musicians? Who can strum and sing us to the promised land...ahem...I mean warning track?

CD, I think you may well be right. No one has come within 14 games in over 50 years. The game is now so much different. On the offensive side, power numbers are the measure, by and large and on the defensive side, a hitter may see 3-4 pitchers in innings 6-9 whereas DiMaggio saw the starter and maybe one reliever. Would be interesting to see how many games DiMaggio got a hit in innings 6-9 against a starter. Would think that might tell a lot. Personally, I don't believe this record gets nearly enough recognition. Talk about being good every day...and probably a little lucky along the way.
With all that said, I love to watch Jimmy Rollins play baseball. Think what he brings is great for the game and fans. Other than Ichiro, I can't think of another MLB player right now who could possibly get to 45 games. That would be fun if it happens. I had always thought Jeter could be one to challenge but he seems to have one major slump for an extended period nearly every season. But when you play the game in NYC, with the pressure and visibility he has, it must be unbelievably hard to maintain mental focus for 162 games.

WOW, that is an interestig flip on the topic. Another point is that the intentional walk was not a common stratagy in the 'ol days. In many situations a "hot" player is pitched around in a critical instances. Was the IBB used as often in the 50's and 60's as it is today?

Maybe Ripkins consecutive game streak is the only "pure" record that that cannot be affected by the changes in the game.

That tells me that records are nothing but numbers and in almost all situations cannot be compared as time goes on and the game evolves.

It really only catches your attention when someone actually get's close to Breaking One.

And my statement about shoting for record's.
Is not right! You play the Game and if by fate or hard work you happen to get close to breaking a record.
You go for it, but put it in the back of your mind. the EH
