My son tells me that many teams they play this year are ranked. Can you tell me where to find such a list? Is there an "official" list or just rumors?

There are several different ranking sources for high school baseball, just like college. The one that came out most recently that has been discussed in this forum is BaseballAmerica.com. PrepBaseballReport.com and PerfectGame.com has several different types of rankings as well.
Then of course you have the newspaper rankings.
Coming soon, the CPLZ (or more commonly known, the Ben Franklin) power index of rankings. Please write all submissions on the correct form (a green/white slip of paper with president(s) pictures on them), for consideration.

My guess would be that the next issue of PBR would have what you're looking for.
Rankings are fun for people to talk about. I have respect for the work of PBR, and the Newspapers. The truth is I can't imagine a more meaningless ranking than a highschool rankings. You can get a couple of top teams based on stud Junior pitchers coming back, and perenial powers like New Trier and Lyons. But how can you know injuries, new stud junior pitchers, and the turnover.
Remember, the NCAA College Football ratings. Everyone gets to see every game. Tehy are analysed out the ying yang. Yet the top teams were knocked off week after week.
Even at the end of the season, when all the games are played there is controversey about who belongs where. With all that scritiny,, and no consensus, how can you pre rank all those high school teams when you can't see them all and the little information available. If you think the pre season high school rankings have meaning to you, enjoy.

I love the fact that Notre Dame will be nowhere to be found in the pre- season rankings. I believe that we will be contending for the East Suburban Catholic and surprise some people this season.
