TR... Don't know this kid but I would think there are more kids then we think that are out there and don't know the recruiting process and or have limited travel ball experience. Quite honestly if my Son had not been aggressive on his part I could see how it can happen. Play HS ball, Play legion with no exposure and play Football in the Fall. Not saying it happens all the time but....

I really was curious where this would fall in the draft if the kid was signable.

Forgot, really good at holding runners and doesn't lose much out of the stretch. Not a complete unknown, his pitching has really come on in the last year. Always been a very good hitter. 50% extra base hits with a high BA. Summer coaches always had him as a D-1 outfielder. The truth is he just really started shaving regularly this last summer.

i think it happens often, for many reasons.late bloomers, not much exposure.small school etc.i know of two leftys ,d3 jc,both crafty .one throws 85,86.the other recently breaking 90.you have never heard of either one and may not ever.both good players.there are alot of kids like this out there.often get over looked.maybe for good reason's?
Baseballpapa I assume we're talking about your son here?? Seeing how he's 18 year old can we assume he is a senior and has committed to a college? If so how did they find him?
I don’t have a lot of experience in this area (most parents don’t) but I’ll give you my take. It’s difficult to determine if your son is well known in the ranks of professional scouts or not. They can be a very tight lipped group. Most of the time they know more than you think. Professional scouts can be very aware of players .... they just don't go public with their information.

You say that your son's velocity has never peaked? As a parent I tend to believe all parents will always see that underdeveloped potential in their sons. Human nature.

The draft is a very unpredictable event. MANY professional people devote most of their waking hours trying to predict the “future” of the draft with mixed results. It’s next to impossible for a parent like you or me to follow our sons into this experience and project the outcome. You need to go through the motions of a good summer team and showcasing your son’s talents and everything will fall into place .... We just don’t know what that “place” is. Big Grin

He is fairly well known with the scouts. We have filled out some questionaires and have been invited to some tryouts. I really tried to stress the slot and not the unknown factor. He's just not real well known because we missed all Perfect Games, etc. I also said "hypothetical" not to hide him, but as you all know, when a parent talks about their son and baseball, you subtract about 5 mph on fastballs and 100 feet on the homerun. I am cursed, I own a stalker and know exactly what he throws. I am going to invent a radar gun with a "Dad mode" that adds 5 or 10 mph when gunning your own kid. Thanks for all your input, it comes back to the unpredictability of the draft.

papa, it's too simple
I'd suggest more could knowledge would be gained posing your question to the scouts familiar with your son, than to annonymous posters

good luck to your son

btw, I'd bet a bagel & cup o coffee that PG already knows about him
and again in '06 PG gets NO picks in the draft

He has a 100% to hit and pitch at one of the highest ranked JUCOs in the country. I know I'm unclear as to my real question. All my scout friends will not give me an answer to anything. His summer coaches played pro ball as did his high school coach. His summer coaches are guessing too high a draft pick in my opinion. No one will venture a guess as to the draft position other than them. No one on this website has. It would help me on planning. He had quite a bit of D-1 recruiting, but I was curious if what I described was a D&F or no draft. The decision on JUCO or a late sign to a really good D-1 would be made easier. However, I cannot get anyone to even guess the draft. I would like someone to say - no draft - then I could help him with the college decision. One reason I kind of like college over the draft is I believe he is a better hitter than pitcher. He was offered by a D-1 to play both ways. His JUCO will also play him both ways. A pitcher is one injury away from baseball being over, a position player is not. I believe he will hit in college like he has in high school and tournament ball.

Top prospects will usually have a number of home visits with scouts, but not until senior year! In our experience, all the scouts we met with gave us a range of where they saw our son being drafted. But when it comes to college, your son needs to select the environment he wants to be in regardless of the draft. A lot can happen between now and June of his senior year. My advise is to not short-change your son's college opportunities now for something that may or may not happen in the future. Smile

Right-hand pitcher in high school. 18 years old. Works 87-91, tops at 92-93. Not real well known. A plus on location, plus on defense, plus bat, very good curve, below average change. Velocity has never peaked. May project another 3 mph.

Body type and age might be a portion of the draft equation. Is he 5-9 or 6-5? Both can throw 90, but one is a better draft than the other. When was he born? Is he 17 or 19 going on 20? What does he REALLY want to do? Being a kid I think, he can't hide what he wants from scouts.

Is he a strike thrower? What is his K/BB ratio?

bbpapa...
I understand how hard it is for your son to make decisions without knowing all of his options. We've been through the same thing ...twice.

My best advice would be to focus your son's decisions at this time on where he would like to attend college. Since you don't know what will happen in the draft, and neither do the scouts really, base college decisions on his current offers and what's important to HIM.

I was always amazed at how perceptive both sons were on their college visits. They saw and sensed so much more than we did. In the end, both made their decisions on what was important to them. One chose the JUCO route because his D1 offers didn't have his prefered degree plan and he loved the JUCO coach and reputation for development. He was drafted in the 31st round as a DTF, but had a shoulder injury that summer and continued to struggle with injuries through his Soph year. He transfered to a D1 that offered his preferred degree plan last fall and is very happy there.

The other son went D1 instead of JUCO because he loved the coach, loved the coach's vision for developing him as an outfielder instead of a pitcher, and felt they really wanted him. When he signed that April he knew that might have kept him from being drafted, but he really wasn't ready for pro life anyway at the time. He still was drafted in the 27th round that June and offered a top JUCO scholarhsip as a DTF, but stuck with the D1. He was drafted again his college junior year in the 3rd round and signed.

Both never regretted their decisions and we supported them 100%.
