My son is a rising senior and is getting a lot of camp invites as I'm sure all the other rising seniors are. I'm just wondering what other members have done to try to figure out which invites are for real, as in they are genuinely interested in seeing your player, and which ones are generic invites, as in they just want your money?

Good question and welcome to the hsbbweb!

My answer is that I have no clue what they are thinking and thus, which ones are for real. The invite might mean something and then again it might not. The invite provides an opportunity to contact them and find out directly and then you'll have the answer. Call them and say something like:
"Hi Coach,

We received a camp invite and would like to know how you became aware of our son. Have you ever seen him play? If so, what did you think?"

If they hem-haw or say something like "Oh, we sent one to each kid who attended the so and so tournament" If that is their response, then you have your answer directly.

On the other hand, if they say something like "We saw your son at so and so tournament and really liked what we saw. He has good size at 6-2 and we like his speed and aggresiveness on the basepaths which fits our program. We also think he'll hit for power down the road as we saw him hit that triple in the tournament" If they said something like that, you might want to consider sending him as it sounds like he would have a good chance of getting recruited.

All this comes down to time and money and interest in a particular program. If you have all three of these things working for you, then why not send him? If he goes there and turns their heads, he will get recruited. I would only send him to a place where he had a genuine interest in the first place.
It is indeed difficult to know for sure. However, there are some indicators.

Prospect camps in late August tend to be the most significant. This is when many school are looking for specific players to fill specific spots. This is especially significant if the invitation comes personally by way of a call or e-mail.

Also, if you have had a talk with the coach and see a clear interest, that obviously is a great sign regardless of when the camp occurs.

Even uninvited specifically, a camp can offer a great chance for a kid to get a chance. I believe it is the best way with a couple of exceptions.
