HS summer tourney this past weekend. FU after certain good plays goes over to player and tosses somthing. Player catches it and puts it away in his pocket.

Own son make a nifty play, here come the toss. puts it away. later son hits a triple, FU trots over, tosses, son puts it away. FU does this over and over. Seems like he's having fun.

In the stands we're all puzzeled. "What the heck is he tossing?"

Asks son after winning the tourney what's up with the FU and what's he tossing to the players?

Answer: Bubble gum.

I am running the risk of sounding like the Grinch here....., and I mean this in no way detrimental to that umpire......but I offer the following:

If you were talking about a rec-league youth tourney then I dont have any issue with the umpire doing that....glad he is having fun and so it would seem the players.....

yet, you said this was a HS aged tourney...things tend to get pretty serious once we age up the the HS level and in summer many players are playing for a purpose (higher baseball). Many of the acceptable things done at youth ball arent met with the same acceptance.....

Such acts might be construed as a lack of seriousness on the part of the umpire and I would discourage higher level umpires from doing these type of things...

This doesnt mean I havent told a catcher "good throw" on a steal or when walking back to my position, I havent said "good play" to a fielder... I have.....but I've done it in a way that is not obvious to the public.

Umpires at this level and above need to be aware of the proper persona to bring to the game....we should be professional, approachable and cordial......the rule book tells us to beware of over fraternization with participants....

What is cute at one level can bring on criticism at higher levels......

I was sitting next to an ex ump and he commented that it broke a protocol. Some of the players went up to him and shook his hand after the game.

While not a "felony" it was a little odd.
