There's a slight chance that the coach meant just what he said to your son.

When my son was going through his recruiting summer, many coaches said one thing and did another. But a couple of coaches were candid and honest -- about both positive and negative things -- and were men of their word, following through on what they said.

Hopefully, the coach that said this to your son is one of the ones who can be trusted.
Not to speak for someone else, but I have told this to players before so that they understand that we are interested, you are not our #1 choice currently at that position, but would like you to still consider us if our #1 choice chooses someone else. We do advice you to keep looking, but we do not want to overrecruit. It's not a terrible thing to be told. Sometimes the #1 choice commits, and sometimes he doesn't. You know the coach is honorable if they call you back with a definite yes or no w/in a fairly short amount of time. It's sad if a coach says this because of a fear of hurting a player's feelings, as they had no intention of commiting to that player in the first place.

As mentioned that are coaches where what they said meant exactly that.

I mean, isn't it the same as a job interview? A business takes applications and resumes. They have several candidates that they feel are a good fit. They just can't make a clear cut decision. So they bring everyone in for a second interview to make their final choice.

Just my opinion.

He heard back from one and is waiting to hear on the other.
