Runner on first and ball hit to third baseman. He throws to second for the force but the fielder has come across the base too soon and is not touching it when he recieves the throw. The second baseman is now on the infield side of the baseline. The runner coming into second takes out his legs. It was basically a leg sweep and took him to the ground.

I know the runner has to go straight into the bag but doesn't have to slide. Wouldn't this be interference / obstruction based on where the second baseman is? He was about two feet away from the bag.

Does the field ump see this or is it the homeplate ump?

I think I messed up because I went to the field ump to discuss this. He kept saying my runner wasn't on the bag and I kept agreeing with him and my argument was the runner took out the fielder. He said he didn't see it.

After thinking about it I can see where he would take his eyes off it to see the play at first and miss the take out slide. Shouldn't the home plate ump be watching for this since there is no other action going on?

I don't know how you guys could miss this one. That's an obvious force-play slide rule violation. The runner and the batter are out.

Either umpire can call this. The BU should stay with the play until THE BALL takes him to the play at 1st. If there was no throw by F4, there is nothing for BU to see at 1st - he should be stopped and looking right at the action at 2nd.

PU makes the call when the violation occurs after the pivot man releases a throw to 1st, but anytime he sees it and BU doesn't, he should to call it.
