My son can miss a total of five days a semester. He too is taking honors classes. He will miss a total of three days of school attending both events since school is out one of the days he will be gone. He is flying in on Thursday nights and flying out on Monday nights. He knows that he can not miss any school for any reason if he wants to attend these events. If for some reason he has to miss school (very sick etc.) he can bring a doctors note and it will be excused. He gets all his missed work in advance and does it while he is gone so he does not get behind. Thats how it works for us.
Our school system has a certain number of absences it will permit during a year. Some are "excused" and some are "unexcused", though in reality they don't treat the two much differently.

My son went to Ft. Myers last year and it cost him two days of school. His school is on what they call a "block schedule", meaning he goes to long session classes but each class meets only every other day. So basically he missed one session of each class for this trip. It was deemed an "unexcused" absence but basically there were no consequences except he had to work to catch up, same as if he'd caught the flu.

With these 2 days in the fall, I think he missed 4 days of school all year, so the impact wasn't all that great.

We're catching a plane to Ft. Myers tomorrow a.m., same situation again. But his carry-on is a book bag, so he can avoid getting too far behind too quickly. Looking at our game schedule there are some big gaps where he'll be able to cloister himself in the hotel room to hit the books.

JB, as for football, I would say you'd be SOL. Just can't do both things, I wouldn't think.
