PLAINVILLE — The District IV baseball all-stars are tops again. Not bad for a team with, as Ryan Fuller put it, no “big names.”

District IV, made up of senior standouts from eastern Connecticut, bullied District II, 5-0, Thursday to capture the Connecticut High School Coaches Association all-star title for the second straight year.

East Lyme’s Wes Aylward hit an RBI single in the fourth and East Catholic’s A.J. Rataic crushed an opposite-field grand slam in the fifth inning. The pitching made it hold up, as locals Chris Zbin (Bacon Academy), Mitch Furber (Montville) and Pat Lowery (St. Bernard) all helped to combine for the shutout.

“We think we play some pretty good baseball down here,” said District IV and Windham coach Ken Valliere. “It’s first an honor to be here, and to win, it adds a little frosting on the cake, if you will.”

It also got sweeter for a number of local stars. Lowery, St. Bernard teammate Anthony Ruffo and Montville’s Taylor Lewis were among the 18 players selected to represent Connecticut in an all-star game against Massachusetts seniors next Thursday at Fraser Field in Lynn, Mass.

Fuller, of Old Lyme, will also join them.

“I just thought they would go off the big names,” Fuller said of the selection committee. “It’s good to give the kids who do well during the games a look, too.”

Both teams got an unexpected surprise Thursday when officials broke out wooden bats for the game.

“No pine tar or anything,” Fuller said. “Just threw them out there.”

District IV, though, still managed to rap out nine hits to its opponents’ three.
